    Base plates for 2gc's

I can not get a tight seal between the butterfly blades and the housing/base of one of my 2gc carbs; thus there is a great vacuum leak through this carb, which messes up everything. Any ideas where I can get either one or three new bases? Someone has warned me about Vintage Speed, and Hot Rod Carb wants 180 bucks each. So, know of anyone else? Or a way to fix the leak? The carbs have no ID number on them, they are three 2gc's, with two of them set up or converted to run as end carbs for a tri power. I've tried all I know to fix the leaking but with no luck. Thanks - kip

Here's a pretty good tutorial on how to do it on a Quadrajet.

Just extract the information that applies to your 2-bbl and use it to your advantage. For bushings, you might try a hobby shop. They usually have several different sizes of brass tubing. Take the throttle shaft with you and see if you can find a piece with an inner diameter that will fit snugly over the throttle shaft. Drill the base plate out to the outside diameter of the brass tubing.

Lacking that, go to any jewelry store. They usually have a small lathe that can turn out small parts like this from brass or oilite. Secure the bushings in the base plate with a dab of JB Weld on the O.D. of the bushing. (rough up the O.D. with some sandpaper to provide some "tooth" for the epoxy).

Go to McMaster-Carr and type in bushings. According to their website, they have 2518 DIFFERENT variations (sleeve bearings):

    ID's from .125" to 3.00" and OD's from .250 to 4.00"

I wish I could but I can't help you with your base sealing problem since I have never had that problem with mine. Unfortunately, most of the shops that specialize in these carbs and systems do charge big $$$ for them. Your best shot might be either a large swap meet, ebay, or other internet markets. If might one to search the parts for sale ads on sites like here, HAMB or other motorhead sites. It seems like these carbs always turn up at swap meets with prices from reasonable to way too much.

When's the next swap meet at Webster?

Kip, Speedway sells the Vintage 2GC conversion bases for the secondary "end" carbs, but they have no idle circuits so they will not work for the primary carb. What exactly is your vacuum leak problem. Are you trying to modify stock bases for the secondaries? There's a lot of extra vacumm port holes in most of these old carbs for various emmission tubes, make sure you have blocked all the holes or you will have a major leak and think it's the throttle plates. I went through a dozen swap meet cores to find enough parts to build three carbs.

I'm building a 3x2 Rochester set right now, and I would like more details on your problem. Eelco has some parts, but no bases, and their extended throttle shafts have been on back order for some time. They do stock jets and gasket kits for 2GC Rochester's.

Techinspector1, good information on the Quadrajet site, thanks.

Thanks for the source Dave. It looks like if they don't have it, you don't need it.
