smallblock id help
Im looking at a car to purchase for the engine.
# i got from the pad are k0910 cmj and part vin#261501249
Went to www.nastyz28.com
and came up with this--->1974 t400 police 4 bolt.
Is it worth buying? definatly needs a rebuild, its been sitting for probably 8 years and the car itself has been eaten alive by the rust demon!
Would it be a bad idea to try to crank it over?If of course the guys willing.
couldn't get block cast # yet ( too dark)

From the id i got from the engine>74 350 4 bolt police th400 i am assuming this motor had some hp in the 250-to-300 area.
Would this be a good assumption?
nast z28 didnt have a hp rating for this one

Re: Re: smallblock id help
From Hollander's 54th edition Interchange Book:
CMJ:
8-305 4BC 155HP
(VIN "H")
LG4 eng.
Chev. Pass. '80
CMJ:
8-350 2BC 145 HP
(VIN 75"H" & '76-'77"V")
L65 eng.
145 hp? Could this be a mistake?, Im not doubting youre knowledge i just wanna be sure. I know they reuse suffix codes sometimes.
The above says 76-77? the description i found on mortec and nastyz28 says its a 74 block?
I made a mistake on the 4 bolt thing it was actually 4bbl
Ill go there again tommorow and get the block casting #will that help to identify?

Yeah, 145 is right for a 2BC 350 for that time period. 4BC 350s were advertised as having 165hp.

I went to the www.nastyz28.com website to figure out how to identify the engine block numbers. The number on my engine is V0624TDS under that is C8B171348 on the other side of the engine it has 41 GM 3970010. I was told this was a small block 400 ... but when I searched the numbers on that website the suffix code TDS was not listed. Does anyone have a website address they know of that would have a more complete list? Or does anyone know by these numbers what type engine this is. Thanks for any help. - mel

And the damper on a 400 nas a relief cut into it about half way around. 400 sbc's and 454bbc's are externally balanced in stock form.Ken Thomas
