305s are a great gas mileage motor but I haven't had much luck with responding to performance parts as well as some of the other mouse motors. Depends on what you want to do with it; I've always preferred a 283 for a small performance V8.

The logic we have kind of come up with in the past when this 305 vs 350 question comes up is...........if you already have a good 305 and performance isn't an issue, by all means use it. They are good, dependable engines, but pretty anemic on the HP scale. When I was in the boat business people would come in for their first scheduled maintenance on their new boat and most would say the same thing....."D***, I should have bought the 5.7 (350) instead of the 5.0 (305)!" Our salesmen pushed the 5.0 because they could get the boat out the door cheaper, and everybody was looking for cheap.
But, if you don't already have the engine it makes better sense to me to just start out with a 350 in the first place. The cost to redo one won't be any more (and sometimes less because of the number of 350's out there), gas milage will probably be better, because the engine can loaf along and not work too hard, and when you need some passing power you will have a lot more.
There was a nice little rat rod truck on Pass Time recently, running a 305. The thing turned 16.9 or thereabouts in the quarter! Soccer Mom minivans are faster than that usually.

I bored mine out .060 over to 315. put in 10:1 pistons, ported the heads, bigger cam. headers and it makes 304 HP. Not really alot but on a 37 truck that weighs 3,000 lbs. I can turn 103 in 14.7.Keep smiling, it only hurts when you think it does!
