    cam switch-over

is it possible to transfer cam and lifters ( all lifters in respective bores) from a sb 400 to an sb 283?Are there block differences that won't allow this switch over?

The two blocks aren't going to be absolutely identical with respect to where the lifters line up with the lobes. It may or may not cause rapid wear of the lifters, even if you put them all back on their right lobes. I have done the same thing before, with good results about half the time.
Just reread my reply, and want to clarify one thing. It's not a question of 400 vs. 283, it's just two different blocks. Nothing to do with cubes. Both your engines can use the same cam and lifters, it's the swapping them after break-in that's the cause of the problem.
