    you can unhook the EGR and plug the line to it and see if it still does it..

    Could be a broken wire in the distributor. The vacuum advance moves, and the connection breaks. Early electronic ignitions did this often. The wires were too brittle. Replacement modules rarely do it. Maybe it's just an age thing.
