getting 420+ HP out of a 350..
first of all, i've never built an engine before... ever.. my goal is to hit around 420-ish HP out of a 355 (.030 over)
first, what type of pistons? what compression?
i can get patriot heads for 650 bucks... and i know their springs can handle up to a 500 lift cam..
what cam? are roller rockers necessary? (i hear they get a HP gain by using roller rockers, but i don't know if thats myth or not)
what intake?
what sized carb?
basically, what would i need to achieve over 400 HP and TQ on a 350 engine? i know it would be easy to get it with a 383, but trying to avoid the extra hassle.
p.s. would like this motor to be fairly streetable, thanks in advance

355
I got around 400hp out of 355. SRP flat top piston , dart iron heads 64cc / 180cc runners , roller tip rockers , Comp xe 268 cam , RPM intake and holley 750 vacuum secondaries. Compression 10-1 . Run low 13's in 1/4 mile. In Nova with automatic and 373 gears.

I personally do not think the Patriot heads will get you there without going the 383 route. Here is a good article from a reputible source. 383 patriot head build the had around a 430 hp range, with even higher torque #s. About 7 pages with dyno sheets also.

1st question should be, how much money are you ready to spend to build a reliable 400 horse small block????Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

what do you mean by that? i figure as long as its built right, without any crappy made in china parts, it should be reliable. i'm not looking to put 100k miles on it, i'm looking to own the car for about 2-5 years at most, and i just want to be able to drive for an hour on the interstate without any problems... not a daily driver, but something that could be, ya dig?

Check out some of the combinations on the website below. It gives you a good idea about how parts combinations perform on the dyno. Combination #3 seems to give you what you are looking for.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT????
Well, I'll try to explain it a little bit
there are some folks on here that can give you maybe the exact 420ish HP out of a 355 sbc with a set of Patriot heads you bought for $650. But----you are going to need some other parts, and knowing your budjet would help a little helping us to pick out maybe a 5 stage drysump instead of only a 3 stage there by saving the cost of a vacume pump---and then again there is the issue of mechanical fuel pumps ---110 gph or 130 gph or do we use Holley red, blue or maybe Barry Grant---then of course do you need a regular?, Return line?, electric water pump?. 1.5 or 1.6 rockers?,stud girdle/,Oh by the way---what rod bolts fit the budget??? internal balance or weighted flywheel /dampner
Are you going to race this and need SFI parts? Smog checks?
