Chevy Malibu 305: 4 barrel to 2 barrel carb

Hi, I am a highschool shop teacher and our new project is we are going to take a 1982 chevy malibu and turn it into a stock car for the local 1/4 mile track.

We have not gotten the car yet, its comming in a couple of weeks but I want to plan ahead and price out the build, I was told its got a 305 with a 4 barrel carb on it.

What I need to know is do I need to change the intake manifold or will the 4 barrel come off and the 2 barrel go on. It has a stock carb now and it will get a stock 2 barrel as per the track rules.

You will need to source a complete 2 barrel intake and carb combination if you are bringing it back to 100% stock. Don't take this the wrong way, but how long have you been teaching auto shop?

strange my first reply didnt post.

I have been teaching auto for about a year now. I usually teach drafting, electronics and metalwork but they started the autoshop up after many years and asked me to teach it as well, as they know I have an automotive background as my dads a heavy duty mechanic and I have been wrenching since I was a kid, (plus when you become a shop teacher you have to take auto classes, thou they are a joke and I learned more from my dad in one day.) however my family has been mostly on Jeeps, I dont have much expereinces on the chevy small block (did own a 1/2 79 pickup truck and changed the carb on it, thou I think it was a big block..

All engine principles are mostly the same so I've got no problems adapting my jeep knowledge working on them.

I assumed I would need a new intake but I have seen the odd vehicle where the carbs are interchangable. I am waiting to hear from the track if a simple adaptor plate will be allowed but they may say there would be performance gains from 4 barrel carbs matching intake....

I would think the rules call for a 2 bbl carb, does it ask for a stock gm carb ? you can buy a adaptor platethat can be used to adapt a 4 bbl to a 2 bbl manifold and vice versa. then you dont have to deal with changing the manifold
some rules tate only that it has to be a 2 bbl manifold and then a big old holley 2 bbl is a good way to go

YES there is a STOCK alternative for you!

You need a rochester quatrojet DUALJET.

It has a 'stock' body, but nothing is drilled for the secondaries. It has a top plate which covers over the secondaries.

These were made for only two years, so they are a tad hard to find. I found mine on ebay. They work great and get good economy.

The carb you're looking for is a Rochester 210. It was used on several GM models late 70' to early 80's. It looks a bit like a 4 barrel, but is in fact a two barrel.

I don't know if the computer control in the Malibu will allow the switch and we certainly don't know what your track rules are, re; the mandatory use of the computer in the fuel delivery.

Here's a few pictures of an old nasty one an the IPB.

    Regards,
    Glenn

NCHARDHAT thinks like I do. Get a copy of the rules and read them through thoroughly. Visit the track and talk to the tech inspector(s). Pick their brain(s) and find out what you can get away with in their opinion. Find out specifically what they will be looking for, then you can find a way to maximize the car without worrying about a technical infraction. Look around at some of the other cars in competition and see what they're doing. Circle track guys traditionally play their cards close to the vest, but you may find one or two guys you can talk to if you tell them that your car will be a school project and you're trying to help the students get a handle on it. That will tell them that you're probably not going to be serious competition to them and allow them to open up a little for you. At least that's how I would approach it.
