350/327 Cam Kits
I have a 63 Chevy II Wagon that has a 327 and powerglide in it. I also have on an engine stand a 350 pulled out of an S10 V8 swapped truck I had. The engine ran ok and was supposedly rebuilt with only 50 miles on it. I pulled the engine apart because the kid that owned the S10 lied about a lot of things on the truck so I wanted to check out the engine. He said it had high compression but I pulled the heads and it has plain flat topped pistons and the bigger 72cc (If I remember correctly) heads on it (I will confirm this later tonight or tomarrow). I am stuck on what to do here with the wagon. I am starting to fix the rust on the car and tearing it completely apart to put in the new turbo 350 tranny. I plan to pull the motor that is in the car now which is a 69 327. There are one of two things I want to do. One is build the 350 on the stand now while I keep the 327 in the car for now and the put the 350 in the car once finished. Or pull this 327 apart to check things out even though the PO on this car said it has no more than 20,000 miles and change the cam if this is my problem and run a 327 in the car instead of running a 350. I am just one who doesn't believe what most PO's say so like to double check things. The car ran fine all the way home but sounds like it has a huge cam or something isn't right. It is very lumpy but constant lumpy idle and the exhaust is VERY strong of raw fuel that is just pouring out and comming back into the vehicle. People 3 cars behind can smell it. I have put on 3 carbs now and one that is correctly adjusted and runs great on my 351windsor thats in my 66 F100. Still, the same strong smell. Either this or pull the 327 now, put in a ne
Anyways I haven't decided whether or not to build the 350 and put it in the wagon or just put a new cam in the 327 and trust what the PO said about it and hope it's reliable enough for a daily driver and just build the 350 on the side for later down the road. In the end I'd like to use the 327 in my 48 Chevy coupe. But for my question on this thread, what would be the best carb size for this motor (I plan to go with a plain Holley 600cfm carb but not a double pumper)? What size cam or cam kit would be the best for this car? I dont want stock of course, something with a little more mid range for highway driving and some much needed power to get this heavy beast down the road would be nice. Would I need to change the lifters and everything or just the cam? This car is going to be a daily driver with A/C and I am using it for work (mobile detailing) and for long cruises to the beach so not only is power what I want but reliability and fuel milage is a concern. The tranny I have that I am putting in (TH350) supposedly has a 2500 stall converter but I think that was a lie too because when I pulled the converter it didn't have any numbers or markings. It has an aftermarket Edelbrock performer intake manifold on it but I also have a Holley Street Avenger (I think that is the name) that I may put on. The rear end I believe has 3.55 gears (stock) in it but I will confirm this later this weekend.
Any info on which size cam to put in would be greatly appreciated here!
I am very sorry for such a long post guys, I wanted to try and add as much info in here about my setup that I can.www.streamlineautocare.com
