Where can I go to find the information about this engine? I thought the engine was original but apparently its not.

The number on the front of the block is:
VK 065268





Rear of the Block (in front of the bell housing)

Here's the deal -

The GM 5.7LG SGI (not SIG as you've listed - threw me a curve there, eh?) breaks down as follows:

GM = General Motors (we all know that)
5.7LG = 5.7 Liters Gross to better equate to an "international/metric measure"

SGI = Spheroidal Graphite Iron. Here's the short explanation:

Spheroidal (nodular or ductile) graphite iron (SGI) has an as-cast structure containing graphite particles in the form of small rounded, “spheroidal”, particles in a ductile metallic matrix. It has been established that all of the mechanical and physical properties characteristic of SGI are a result of the graphite being substantially or wholly in the spheroidal/nodular shape such that its bulk physico-mechanical properties are determined primarily by the steel-like matrix.

As to the VK 065268 - you will not, in all likelihood, be able to make any sense of this number. It is not a production nor an after market (Goodwrench) replacement part. This number was probably stamped by an independent re-builder and this code means something only to that re-builder. It could be something as simple as "the sixth (06) engine to be rebuilt on May (5) 26th, 1998 (8). Or it could be something entirely different all together. The VK probably equates to the type of rebuild that occurred, i.e., bore, over-sized bearings, etc..

Bottom line is you have a 5.7 (350) block. You'll have to measure bore and stroke to determine if it's been altered.
