400SBC bone stock w/69k miles whats it worth??
looking to put chevy power in my 65 buick skylark. found a 400sb complete from pan to carb. bone stock except for the edelbrock intake and holley 750. has 69k miles and came from a blazer. not sure about year or if it is a 2 or 4 bolt. comes with a fresh built 350t tranny with extra clutch packs and shift kit. he wants 1500$ for the combo. should know year and main tomorrow. any advise is app.

A lot depends on the area you live in. For one State that might be too high and in another it might be ok. When I lived in Pennsylvania motors were pretty cheap because the cars all rusted out but the engines survived, and were plentiful. We moved to North Carolina and I got sticker shock because the cars didn't rust away as fast, so the cars got driven more miles and the owners needed engines to keep them alive. I actually considered starting a business buying engines in Pa and selling them in NC.
But to answer your question, to me that seems a little high, like $ 750 to $ 1000 high.

i thought it was high to. i do like those 400sb though. the deal is i have a 2007 yamaha phazer fx snowmobile that needs some parts but is in good shape. i figure its worth 3000-3200 as is, it books for 3800-5000 low/avr he wants to give me 1500 cash and the motor/tranny for it. i only have 1500 into the sled. i can also trade it for a nice built 355sb with a fresh built 350t tranny. motor has good parts and tranny is new from pump to clutches, shift kit and 2500 stall. he has reciets for most everything and a dyno sheet for the motor. 352 h.p. but he wants to trade straight up for the sled.

Good 400 cores and engines are getting harder to find. a stock motor only makes around 265 hp but a good core is endless the hp capabilties, i bought my 1970 400 4 bolt as a core for $250 but the only thing i used orginal was the block only built a 406. but if you find out the year of the motor that will tell you if its a 4 bolt or 2 bolt 1970-73 blocks are 4 bolts but 1500 is a little high even for a combo tranny and engine.

My model A cpe has a 400sbc with a Competion Cams Magnum 268 mated to a 700r4.
Paid 800 for engine only in march 2007, in Miami.

the engine is a 4 bolt. it is a "72" and i hear ya about gettin rid of a sled in may!!! lol "may" have the sled sold for cash. that would be better and ill just build something. still considering going to check out that 355/350t setup seeming i can test drive the set up.

For that kind of money you would think it had just been rebuilt.

if it even was rebuilt back to stock i would say that would make it worth close to what he wanted for it. and by the way the motor has 62k on it not 69k. not that that makes it worth any more.

I paid a couple hundred for my 400sb. It was complete carb to pan. Could have used it as is, but not enough hp for me. I would say that's too much for even the combo.

Why?
Why not take the EZ way and drop a 69-70 455 Buick in, that would annillate that small block SBC.

This is any interesting quote for the amount of money you would have in a bb buick you can build a great running 400-421 sb chevy and run circles around it plus its lighter and better availabity of parts, rods heads alumin ecs. dont get me wrong i love a bb buick and have driven a few strong ones but nothing beats a tourqy sb that spins to the moon.
Stock whole different story buick would get the job done nicely over a small hp 400Last edited by Pro fleetline; 05-30-2009 at 08:50 PM.
