Less then 10 microns is the norm for an automotive fuel filter, particularly if it's an EFI engine. More, like 40, for a carbed engine.
Here's an article:

Fuel filter
Summit has put a caution notice not to use a paper filter element berween the tank and pump,I found out the hard way, P.O.S. Fram plugged up my new electric fuel pump and fried it in less than two hours run time

That's fine after the pump but not on suction side of an electric fuel pump.
You need the biggest filter you can fit. The Aero filter is 60 sq inches of filter & 100 microns. That installs between the tank & the electric pump. The 10 micron can go in the engine compartment or on the motor.
Edit: I found the article I was looking for.

between the cell and the electric pump
Thanks for the input..Steves32 got it right! .after talking to an Aeromotive tech today the 100micron level is what they require for, at least, their SS pump. Here is a PDF file they furnished...sorry, I could not figure how to link the pics with the file..

I use a Mallory fuel filter between the tank and the Mallory pump.

Great thread, but now I am questioning my fuel filtration system...
I have a Professional Products canister type fuel filter pre-pump, I believe it is 10 micron. I am not sure of the element type (probably paper) but there is a PP replacement filter as well as a FRAM element.
I have plans to install an inline post pump/pre carb filter, would a 40 micron there be enough? Should I revise my fuel filtration schema entirely?Burning gunpowder and gasoline daily for over 20 years and counting!

No expert here...but 100microns before the electric pump and 10 before the carb seems to work...D
