283 overbore
I have a 57 with a 283 that needs rebuilding. The machinist said that he may need to go .060 over to get rid of some pitting. I recently read that the 1957 283 has thin walls and should not be bored over .030. I talked to the machinist and he is convinced that .060 will not be a problem. Has anyone heard of the "thin wall" that I refered to? Does anyone know of a 283 from a 57 that is bored .060 over?

I know 283s cast for trucks can be safely bored .125" over.

You should look for a machinist/machine shop that has the capability, or uses a sublet that has the capability, to sonic test the cylinder walls for adequate thickness. Irrespective of the original cast thickness, corrosion over the years could also errode the back side of the walls too. .060 has been done to early 283s many times, but without sonic checking you could ruin an otherwise savable block.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon

I once had a283 in a 57 chevy that was bored 60 over, but it was a 59 block. Never had a bit of problem with it.Ken Thomas

I have been re-reading my HP-How to hotrod the sbc. It states the 57 283 is not a good candidate for more than an 030 oversize. 58 and up are newer castings (sidemount bosses) and can generally be bored to 4".
Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
