355 Help plz!
Ok here the story built a 355 put about 1000 miles on it and it droped a valve but was shut off immideatly. I took the heads off had the valve replaced. Looked at the piston and it had a minor scratch on the top i didnt see any cracks. put it back together and had it on a firing stand when we fired it up it blew a little smoke out of the derby exhast stacks. ran great shut it off and let it cool for the night. went out the next morning and fired it up and oil was raining out of the headers. I thought maybe some went wrong with the piston but i dont think thats the case b/c its blowing out both sides. Maybe the valve guides went bad? Im just lookin for some opinions. Maybe im not lookin in the right place? thanks

all pipes oily ? sure the intake is sealing up and not sucking oil up .valve guids do not just go bad in a 1000 miles less they were not size right . what valve seal s are you using ? PC or O ring s or umbrellas ? what are you do you have for breathersIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

Do you have a single plane manifold on it??

I had a problem in a 327 similar. I bought some assembled 2.02 and 1.190 valves. I bent a valve on one side( told the guide was too tight) and dropped a valve on the other side..well expensive lesson, buy parts from people/ companies you trust and not off some rebuilding house selling on ebay.. yong and ignorant wanted to save 300$

Yea thats what im sayin i dont know where to start.....do i pull the heads and ahve them checked completly??? or do i tear it all the way down and start over?...Other than the valve guides being bad what else would cause oil in the cylinders? besides bad rings? Its a edelbrock torker 2 manifold

start by looking at the crank case venting then look at the guids .you could take the heads off or pump air in the spark plug hole buy the tool to re seal it .i grab the retainers and move the valve in the guid if there s fair mount of move ment there the guids are on there way out. but umbrellas should help dry the up abit .if a cast piston and it,s crack it will smoke the hotter it get the more it,s going to smoke .if you have a big cam in it you could of smash the seal off the guids or beat the seals up by way over rev ing the engineLast edited by pat mccarthy; 01-31-2010 at 07:13 PM.

How's about doing a leak down check on the cylinders, see where the compression leaks are before you even tear it down...?????Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

if the piston is crack it will not leak down cold ? i do not think its going to help if seals or guids are loose if the valves still are sealing ?Irish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

With that much oil in the pipes, should be able to hear the air going out either the top or bottom just plugging an air hose into the cylinder at TDC?????Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

i do not know he said the top of the piston had a scratch ? a cast piston will not take much of a hit .if it is crack it may not leak down much or not at all cold but hot it going to smoke like hellIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

Yeah, but how would 1 cracked piston account for all the pipes having oil in them??????Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!
