Thread: 267 2 barrel carb?

I have this 1980 El Camino with a 4,4 Liter 267 V8 that is all stock. I rebuilt the stock 2 barrel Rochester carb on it but now having a major problem. I obviously did something wrong because it's spewing fuel all over the place and not sure if this is part of the carb problem or just a coincidence that it happens at the same time but it is pouring out white smoke out the exhaust and wont stop and smells VERY rich of fuel and a bit of a sweet/oil smell too. Smokes so bad that my clothes, garage and room near the garage smells for a day.
This car has been nothing but a MAJOR headache and I am getting close to just throwing the interior back in it and front end and selling it.
My question here is about the float in the carb. Seems that the new one I put in didn't need to be adjusted at all because it matched it's drop and such with the old one that was in it already. Also there is the little needle on the back that sits in the hole where the fuel comes in (bottom front of carb) and there is a clip type thing on top of that needle but I do not know if that little clip goes on the flat part of the float arms or the pivot type rod that goes through both arms and sets in a groove where the float pivots. I know it sounds confusing but I am hoping that you guys who rebuild these things often know what I am talking about.
Second question is where the heck are the air mixture screws at for this thing? I read an article about it and said they are on the base and in front of the carb like on an Edelbrock carb but there is only round looking rivet things there that fill in those holes, no screws.

BTW, I opened the carb back up because I am tearing it back down again to recheck my work and found two small pieces of metal in it like the size of a pencil lead. It was not very very tiny shaving it was actually a little chunk. Not sure how the heck that got in there but all I know is that I was very careful and clean when putting the carb back together and back onto the engine... It's got me worried because of all the smoke and now before I took it off the engine would not crank over.
