283 questions
First time post. Just lookin for some help. 1957 283, pistons are over-sized and block has been bored. Pistons are same size as 327. What does this mean? Is it now a 4.00" bore, making it a 327? And if so, what exactly does that mean? As far as horsepower and torque and all. Also, does anything special need to be done to motor because of this? However, do note that every part on the inside and outside of motor is new. Entire engine has been rebuilt. Also, I have heard that in generalities a 283 bored to 4.00" is almost a grenade, just waiting to explode. I have also heard that the older model 283's can safely bore out that far. Is 1957 an old enough model? Please, help me out with some clarification on this. ThanksLast edited by leeman_77; 02-04-2010 at 03:25 PM. Reason: forgot somethin

If a 283 is bored to 4.00 and the stroke is left alone, the resulting displacement would be 301.44 cubic inches .......... a 327 has a 4.00 inch bore and a 3.25 inch stroke ............ 283's bored out to 4.00 aren't grenades if the bore job was done properly ......... that block is quite comfortable with that increase

FYI, if it's a true 57 block it has no motor mount bosses on the sides of the block.Ken Thomas
