1 liter per kilometer?milage
Hi all thanks for you time
just got a 76 motorhome
with a chevy chassis 1 ton i think (duellies in the back)
worked nice at the farm when buying
got down the road and died
weak batt and bad gas /rusted fuel system
after 2 days of guessing at the side of the road far away
both tanks gone lines shot as it sat for 15 years if my calculatios are right
anyhow i hooked up a outboard motor gas tank with a elec pump(was there)
and new fuel filter and replaced the carb filter too
and hooked it up directly to the manual fuel pump intake (the manual pump is there too)
now i got 1 km per liter or 20bucks of gas for 20 kilometers
or 20$ for 12 miles
did the rest of the fuel go back into the rusted tanks in the bottom
as the 2nd smaller line (? return line?)line was still conected to the manual pump?
i really hope so or im in deeper than i thought! thanks a ton ?

I have to say that some of those old motor homes were horrible on gas - with the 454 Chebbie being right at the top of the guzzler list - but a liter per km is horrible. Lets figure gas mileage in US so us Southerners can understand.
20L=5.3 gallons. 12miles/5.3 = 2.2 mpg!
First of all look at that carb. Stuck choke? Float full of gas? Dirt? Then next, the ignition. Is it advancing? Vacuum lines OK? Transmission shifting to drive? Spark plugs the right range? If all these are OK or can be repaired, and mileage doesn't improve much, then a compression check to get an idea of the internal condition is next.
Most of these engines had a Q-jet on them. While they are good carbs, not known for economy on 454's
Don't know how heavy/final gear ratio/what the frontal design is for that MH, but 7 to 9 mpg would be about normal for a carbed engine of that vintage in a MH. My 8000# F350 pulling my 11,000 5th wheel will vary from 7 to 10mpg, with normal about 9.Dave W
I am now gone from this forum for now - finally have pulled the plug

thanks
well seller says the carb is brand new (and it looks clean enough to eat off of)
and said he put in a new distributer and plugs !
maybee he said wires too
i will check into advancement and other possibilitys mentioned
im shure the engine is tired
could only get up to 60km with crappy batt
then got over 70 km with a spare batt
but didnt wan to push it as it sounded like a lifter? hitting the vallve cover?
the sound was worse with the crappy batt it seemed to me
thanks a ton

there were return lines on vehicles back in the 70s as part of emissionn stuff
plug it off or maybe crimp the line flat---
also the quadjet carbs had small primaries and to make any speed with heavy/large vehicles, drivers would have seconaries open and gas would be getting into intake however the air valve might not be open--
454s back then got about 6 mpg-- and the compression was low so no power

i see ready to go engines from 3 to 9 g
or can i swap to diffent (newer )engine or diesil ?
thanks a ton

how much modification would be needed to swap out these engines
what years should i be considering for the 6.0 iron block with 6/90 trans?
i assume it would not be a s simple as plucking the old and dropping in the new one !
what else would i need with the engine if i was to get a engine from the wrecker (electronics etc)
also what would i expect to pay a pro to do it - engine cost
thanks again
