    blown SB,or BB

I got this stroker SB running like a house afire but you can never have to much power, so I'm wondering which is the best bang for the buck a 454,maybe stroked or not, or a blown SB. And of course the questions that goes with that.
Do all 454's interchange? I know some other blocks have car or truck deck heights. What about the 454?

The people that have stoked a 454,have you had any problems? I know that when an SB is stroked the 4 bolt is the preferance to avoid "cap walk". What about the 2 bolts of the 454 or do you just keep the RPM down where it dont matter?

The most common 454 block around here is mobile homes, any issues with them?

I like the look of a blown engine but the cost short and long term is more, and if I ever sell the car, that hoods got that hole which will be used to dick price.

As you all can see I'm leaning 454. I'm on a budget and it lends itself a lot more to doing it piece meal as I can afford. So my last question is what about net gains? My little stroker is all about low end response and torque. How much does that 60 cubes give a fella right down low?And how is tuning a 454 compared to a SBC? Cause with this thing being so well tuned I dont wanta end up in a situation where a BB is harder to draw power from and tune so I end up 7-8000$ into something that has me wishing my 383 were back in there

no not all 454s are the same some stuff will fit and other stuff will not i would have to write a book for you . so better to just ask about one part at a time as for stroking a bbc i done many the 9.800 and 10.200 blocks .if you go past 4.250 crank there some block work to get the rods to clear not to bad has alot to do with the rods .and some times you may have a small bit of work with the 4.250 crank same deal the rods any stock GM rod the bolts may hit were a cap screw H or I beam they can be less work

So if you were out to find a 454 block of the least hassle to possibly stroke where would you look for it(type of vehicle) and what code #?. By least hassle I mean the things you mentioned,ie getting aftermarket parts to fit and clear. I think if a fella strokes anything its almost a given the rods are aftermarket. Let me ask. Is there really a lot more off idle torque to be had over a really well tuned stroked SB?

a 496 make alot of TQ more then a sbc . i done the mark 4 block and 5 and 6 blocks some has alot to do with what block you find .if your looking for a GM block any of them will work the older block s are the ones i like to work with 1970 to 89 mark 4 but good older blocks are getting hard to find . as for the rods you can and i have built 1/2 dozen or more with the re built stock size rod with a 4.250 crank . but more 489.s 496s 540s.548s. 556.565 with the 4.250 crank and 6385 rods. i have built the bbc with bore size 4.310 to 4.625 . with a 4.250 . 4.375.4.500 ,4.750 cranks and building a some day 5.500 crank engine .some of theres builds needs a world .dart . bowtie blocks and many others that can take a big bore some blocks have a spread oil pan rails and a hi cam block for bigger then a 4.750 crank .you did ask about the two bolt bbc there are very strong one of the best botton ends out there in stock form they will hold more power then any stock 4bolt GM sbc ever dreamed of taken . to get cap walk on a bbc you have to be pushing very ....very hard

Hi, you know a good motor to use if you are able to use a blower is a 366 tall deck bbc. The pistons are huge and can take alot of heat, and the smaller size is not as much of a factor with the blower. They can be had super cheap at the junkyard, and if you tear one up who cares, get another one. But they are indestructable!! I have always wanted to do this, they come in garbage trucks school busses kodiak top kicks and dump trucks.. They seem like they are meant for a blower, they already have the right compression ratio even... my .02

A stroker BBC or a blown SBC is a bit like looking at a pretty girl & trying to decide whats the best part of the view.

Both can and will get you excited. But not as excited as a blown BBC. (thats the girl with the real long legs)

You havent said what the engine is going into, but if you have the room, and can stretch to it, a blown stroked BBC is a mighty fine way to go. Ive got 540 cubes and a 671 in street T bucket and I cant imagine downsizing to a blown SBC.

But I didnt enjoy driving the bucket when I had a tunnel rammed 454 in it. Was a strong motor but lacked the low down grunt of the blower motor.

But back to your question, for a street motor you want torque so I would change the pistons on your 406, put in a 113 lobe separation roller cam and put a 671 on top with a couple of Edelbrock 750s.

Trust me, once you have had a blown engine, nothing else compares, and they scream hot rod. Sure, a pair of turbos may get you to 1000hp, but unless its a Gale Banks setup, it wont look so cool. And a GB setup will get your budget several times over
