    Cool 305 Hotrod Truck ?Help?

    I WILL build a 305 hotrod truck, so if your here to tell me to drop a 350 in it you are wasting your time, everyone has a 350. Who has a 305? I WILL when I'm done. Now to the meat of my concerns. Everything under the sun will swap onto my powerplant but not everything works well together. I cant afford to keep modding based on individual part performance just to find out that the new part chokes the grunt out of a previous mod. Im Lost here as to a good combo. The only parts to hold thier own are a 2" TB spacer, Holley TBI unit, and Thrush exhaust. Trying to find other mod's that dont require removing the TBI (I like it ok...not gonna change it). Any help on wether a DPM or a SPM intake would be better? Thanks! and Happy Hotrodding!!

    Ok, I'll try to help but, a 350 is the easiest and cheapest motor that has been used because of that but, you do not want to do that because you want to be a little diffrent but, a 305 TBI is not the best of choices, it makes 165 horses ( stock ) and ur restricted as to what performance parts u can use cause ote computer or ECU that it requires, some cams are to radical, wiring, just plain not a good idea for any motor swap when power is wanted cheaply. What I suggest is getting a 283 or 327 truck motor from an old Chevy or GMC truck, I belive that ither of these motors are rare to be seen in a hotrod truck or car and 300 horses can easily be achived for both of these. If you still want the 305, get a edlebrock performer package and a set of 350 heads. The edlebrock performer package is the intake, 600 Cfm carb for your application and the cam. There are hotrods with 305's and have seen a few around lately. The performer package is tunecd to work togther so no to minimum tuning is needed.

    well why not just getting a 350 4 bolt main and putting the 305 crank in it, its still a 305 just with some more to hold that crank in it will turn a lot more rpms then that 2 bold 305 block. if you do that then why not just get the rpm performer package i don't know if i would use a 600 cfm i would go with around 500 that will give you more then you need. if you want to get real different the put 2 4 barrals on it every one will think its at least a 350. thats what i would do. so maybe i helped you out. let us know what you do and how it turns out.

    Sounds like you're throwing away a lot of money to have an alleged fast 305. Little inch motors don't pull heavyweight trucks real well.

    $ per HP everyone knows a 350 makes more than a 305, but a 305 can be a solid performer. my 76 C10 short/step ran low 14s with a very mild 305 & my 86 ElCamino ran 13.70s with a very streetable 305 with 3.08s.
    Now I also realize that for the $ I coulda ran about 3-4 tenths quicker with a 350, but still alot of fun.
    There was a rumor going around here that the engine in the Elky was a 350 & that I was just tellin everyone it was a 305. LOL

    I bored my 305 out .060 put in a mild cam, new pistons,manifold with a 600 cfm carb and it moves my 37 chevy right along.
    Keep smiling, it only hurts when you think it does!

    I see where you are comin from. I have just bought a super clean 85 swb. I plan on putting a 350 in with vortec heads, but I am tempted to rebuild the 305. Why? you all ask. So when I smoke people I can say I did it with a 305. Plus there would be a big fat ITOLD YOU SO to everybody who says that 305's aren't fast. So far I don't think that anyone has really addressed your question. They haven't said anything that has made me want to cross that line anyway.

    whith proper tuning a 305 will do very well it is a more eficiant engine. if you look a stock factory specs inch for inch the 305 is very a respectableperformer. I my self run one in my 82 Seirra long bed and when hualing 1500lbs of doors it moves right along. We did a honest everyday situation test at our shop two weeks ago. We took the 3/4 ton chevy with a fuel injected 350 and hooked it up to our door trailer wich was loaded an ran up the highway then hooked up the trailer to my truck and ran it up the highway which one pulled better mine did but not buy much what made us decide to dedicate mine to the job better milage. we are a lumber yard with door shop and windows and our trucks get a lot of towing and hauling miles the 305 has yet to letus down.

    Here is my point. in stock form 305s ARENT fast, but, they can run very strong. as far as them being more efficiant, In stock form, I dont think so.
    Now with that being said, it doesnt mean I hate 305s, Ive built a couple fairly quick ones my self
    But fact is dollar for dollar a 350 will make more power. hell just a a stock rebuild kit is almost 100.00 cheaper for a 350 than a 305.
    As far as MPG, depends how its used,if both engines have to work hard all the time, Id say the 350 could get as much MPG as the 305. for light duty, everyday driving, sure, the 305 might do a little better.

    yea i put an edelbrock cam and intake manifold in my 1988 chevy pickup *1500*, added a hypertech chip, and advanced the timing 3 degrees, and my truck hooks up and goes, no complaints at all, the 305 is extremely underrated, and in my opinion i can keep up with any stock 350 with the little bit i did to my so called "puny" 305. My question was, where did you get the exaust for ur truck im lookin for something loud, obnoxious, and able to scare the old ladies
