Help me out, thinking weird again
Must have spent too much time today bored with wet sanding...
Here's what I'm dreaming about today for my '57 gasser project. IMO to stick with what the tri-five gassers were in the mid 60's, it's gotta be a mouse motor that will rev to the moon!!!!
so, How's about this:
Dart SHP Pro 4.125" block
3.25" lightweight crank
(Callies Magnum or similar?)
Aluminum rods
(Pat has mentioned Bill Miller and one other brand)
Custom pistons (of course)
(going to be running E-85 so CR of 12.5 ti 13.0 is fine without playing with
the cam timing
Solid roller cam with the forced oiling rollers
Brodix -10 heads
(Cause a buddy has a pair he wants to trade for some labor)
Tunnel ram with 660 Holley's
What do you think, what did I leave out, should I be committed?

Do those blocks come supplied with anything like girdles for oil valley or bottom end. screen for bottom end, cam shaft ect. I have never bought a Dart block so I am not sure.

Here is the thing about building a car like your 57, Dave. It has to be impractical as h***, loud, and outrageous. When you pull into a show or just drive it you want the crowds to part, like Moses and the Red Sea. Gassers, by their very nature, are animated beasts that really only belong on the drag strip, but we love to take them on the roads anyway.
I know a person can get more HP per buck from a big block, but lots of gassers in the day screamed with high winding small blocks like you are describing. Harry Luzader's green 32 Ford, although technically an Altered, ran a little 292 CI Chevy that pulled the wheels in all four gears.
No matter what you do to this one it is going to turn out cool.

I have always been a big fan of RPM small blocks, go for it. A friend of mine just built a 4" bore with a 2" stroke. You should hear that thing

I knew there was 700 hp in this combo, I just had to find the right cam to get there. Swapped in a CompCams #12-900-9, 252/258, 0.630"/0.630", 106 LSA, timing events 20/52/55/23, retarded 2 degrees.

If you are going to use it on the street i would beware of the ally rods, I had a set from Miller that were called street duty for my old 6/71 blown 427 Ford and they stretchedIts aweful lonesome in the saddle since my horse died.

I was thinking this is a race car because of the Aluminum Rods.
I was gonna go aluminum in my cleveland but thought I should go with steel eagle rods since mine will be driven on the Street more then the track.

Dave, back in the early 70's I raced a 67 camaro with 327CI small journal with 283 steel crank 13.5 cr trw full floaters don't remember cam specs but it was a factory GM solid lift. It scared more guy's at the line then it beat because I would hold the rev at 7500 to 8000 at staging, man would that thing launch hard,it would sit on the wheelies bars thru 2 shifts, carry the wheels 2 to 3 feet off the ground the whole time. rev limiter was set at 9500. I had to tear it down every other week and replace brg and rod bolts. Boy was that fun................lol

bill millers are one maker of rods alum rods need to be in the hole abit more then a steel rods there s GPR and miller and others . miller rods for the BBC i have were made for the build there far from cheap and far from junk.... some have been used on the street in a low mile engine. BME rods are made with a Boeing alloy . all alum rods grow. as for a small stroke and big bore SBC well there is a new crower crank on race junk for a BBC 3.00 stroke and use a 4.625 bore make your sbc sound like a mosquitoLast edited by pat mccarthy; 12-09-2010 at 02:26 PM.

Thanks for the input everyone!!! Richard, those numbers look phenomenal!!!! As Pat mentioned, been seeing some very interesting crankshafts on Racing Junk....have to see what I come up with before dialing in the rest of the parts...
As for "streetability", I have a very loose definition of it.....Doubt it would ever see more then a bit of Saturday night action, and maybe a car show or two---and with a car like that it would more then likely ride in the trailer to the show, then some cruisin' (or whatever else comes up!).
Howard, I do have a set of Hilborn's left over from the sprint car days.... After some play time on the street I'd like to switch it over to the injectors on methanol and strictly drag racing....

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
