    350 engine help

I am brand new to this site and looking for input on a engine I will be building some time this winter. First what the engine is for: I am currently building a 1986 monte carlo Luxury I believe into a dirt figure 8 racer. Currently has a 305 and a 200r4 that I plan to replace with a 350 engine and trans. The class I plan to race in is the stock class, meaning "stock engine" (kinda). The rules state must use stock exhaust manifolds. All ignition rotors, caps, coils and modules must remain OEM-appearing. Must have unaltered OEM factory intake, No aluminum intakes. Unaltered 2 barrel stock OEM carburetor for that engine only. Must remove carburetor choke plate. No carburetor spacers allowed. One 1/4" maximum thickness gasket only. Adaptor allowed from a 4 barrel intake to a 2 barrel carburetor. All engine components must be steel. No after market engine components. No porting, polishing or alterations of any kind to heads or intake. Engine must be OEM appearing and must be able to be used in conventional passenger car without alteration. Maximum engine compression allowed is 8.6:1. Must be able to carry 16 inches of vacuum @ 1000 RPM. No double hump heads. No solid cams. I realize this is a lot of information. And these rules say alot but it is what they don't say that I am interested in. I plan to use a rochster carb with an adaptor plate and a four barrel iron intake. Looking for suggestions on what to use for a good set of heads that will flow well made of iron, and what kind of a cam to use. The tracks I will be running on are mostly less than a 1/4 mile and I will need to be able to get on and off the throttle alot so need all the bottom end power I can get. I like to run my engine about 3500-4500 rpm or so and will be installing a gear ratio of 3.42 or so absolutley no lower than a 3.50 per the rules. The tech inspector will do a compression pump of the engine and a vaccum check of the cam. Any info will be given max concideration and greatly appreciated. Worst of all I am working on a budget and that never helps. Thanks.

Sounds like you should look for a stock engine in that configuration already and go play.......

Alot of that type of racing comes down to the driver..the engine always helps, but luck of the draw and driver play a big part also.

I would imagine you will meet some nice people that will share what works there and help you out....most people are nice and love to help out someone new, this keeps the sport going and of course there will be some less than nice people too.

Get in there and have fun, this is what it is all about...winning will come with time and experiance.

Hope this helps some and above all have fun!
Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

Threw my involvement in Parts Peddler Magazine's auctions which is big in circle track racing,I saw guys that had stock cast iron exhaust manifolds ported by a company that would force a abrasive thick clay like material under high pressure threw them. You might want to google the magazines name to look at tips and tricks.
    Good Bye

I have done this kind of racing off and on for about 10 years, I am looking to get that power egde over the competition if I can. Not worried about the driver part of it. I have been told that vortec heads flow better any truth to that.
