You can get them little oil splash guards that go on the rockers and it wont be so messy .

they don't work on rollers

I have a couple sets of old valve covers with the centers cut out (like the picture) and it really helps to contain the mess when adjusting the valves. Takes a bit of measuring, but cut enough to feel the lash and adjust the nut..

Same here with an old set of stamped vakve covers.

someone used to make sbc valve covers that had the whole top plate surface come off leaving the fence around the rockers
