You can get them little oil splash guards that go on the rockers and it wont be so messy .302 c.i. of knowledge power

I have a couple sets of old valve covers with the centers cut out (like the picture) and it really helps to contain the mess when adjusting the valves. someone used to make sbc valve covers that had the whole top plate surface come off leaving the fence around the rockers
