Have you done a draw test on the starter to see how much amperage it pulls when trying to start the car???? Old trick we use on a lot of cars is a toggle switch to shut off voltage to the distributor when you first start cranking the car....makes it crank easier...then when you get it spinning good flip the toggle switch to on and fire it up!!!

Like Gary says, you're asking for ideas but not providing much detail. Is this a recurring problem, i.e. does it always start good when it is cold, or did it start OK the last time, warm up and then has not started again? Was it running OK, and just started doing this, or did you change something recently? A little more history would help, just like going to the doctor...

The positive cable from the battery to the solenoid is too small. Try to find at least some 4 gauge cable and it should solve your problem.

Your ground from the battery to the block should be checked.

My favorite, 4 gauge welding cable with copper lugs sweated on and heat shrink applied. Grind down to bare metal on the block, frame and firewall and install 2 new ground straps, firewall to frame, frame to block. Install new battery ground cable.

And then again, it might be that the mechanical advance mechanism in the dist isn't returning to the stop. Seen this hundreds of times on older stuff

I doubt you're having problems with the starter getting too hot in the winter time. Check your grounds first, then your positive cable size but don't discount Jerry's thoughts about the HEI distributor, either.
