    327 chevy engine

A buddy gave me his 327 chevy engine out of a 64 super sport. Its has a warped cylinder head and since I Don't have access to a milling machine I was wondering if a large belt sander would take enough of the metal off so the head gasket would seal

Oh, it will take enough off to seal and then some, but you'll be worse off than before. If you're going to be jerry rigging like that, you will probably be better off taking a piece of sand paper and sticking it to a perfectly flat surface. Then, slide the head back and forth across the sand paper.

Try it and find out, the most your gonna need is a new or rebuilt set of heads if you screw it up. Try the sander with 160 paper first, then work down until it's perfectly smooth, probably goin to be around 400 grit paper b4 that happens but, If you don't try, ypu will never know if it works or not. Round here some people use masonry bits and drill presses to bore there blocks out but, they don't run 2 good, I wouldent do that though. Use what you got to make the best of what you got.

Na, some people I know actually did use masonry bits and drill presses. The engines don't run very good because, why would they. I would not trust the Boces near me to do that kind of work cause they sometimes forget to put various things back like lugs, dipstick and oil cap. I will get my engine heads for the 350 Gmc truck swapped with the ones off my 267 because the 267 heads have 60cc chambers and the truck heads have 76cc chambers and, I want the low end torq. Just out of curosity, how much does it cost to get a Chevy V8 350 rebuilt? And for a rebuild into a 383? I almost know the motor is siezed because it has sat for so long but it only had 23,000 miles on it when it was pulled from the 74' Blazer it came from. I cannot tell if the motor is seized because the bell housing wasen't correct for the truck and caused resistance when starting it and, it took 2 batteries to get the starter to start it so, without removing the engine and removing the plugs, I cannot tell if it is seized.

I agree with streets take the heads to a machine shop and have them mill it,better safe than sorry.

matt depending on who does the work you/shop if your talking a "stock" type rebuild on a 350 i have gotton away with it for less than $650 with no "fancy" parts.

Actually My friend gave me the 327 to fix. I was going to take it to a machine shop but he asked me if a belt sander would work and I said let me post it which I did. I agree, no belt sander.

Take it to the shop. You would have to do BOTH heads. or you would mess up the compression. And these heads are gettin hard to find. my head #no is 3884520. milled 0.20. Block #no. 3782870.

I don't think I would be able to get a speeders tickit in that truck, it's geared very low and my grandfather said, it would only do about 70 saftly. I'd almost just have the block bored and then I'd build it up myself. The 383 sounds a little complicated when, a .30 overbore on a 350 would do nicley. I will probably be using my 267 Impala heads to gain compression cause the ones on the motor are 76cc and the Impala heads are 60cc. Getting a tickit for smoking all 4's in the parkin lot would be possible though .
I will have the nicest 4x4 truck in my town cause, most of the old 4x4's are rustouts and, I will redo all the interior and, the only body panals in need of replacing are the rockers. What's a good engine combo for a truck with a 74' V8 350 that I want to pump out around 400 ft pnds of torq but I don't care about the Hp's.

Oh, the truck has 4.11 gears so, that's how low they are.

Matt i use to be into the big tire 4X4 thing myself awhile back and for a good tourqe 350 i would say a good combo for a 4x4 truck would be.
    650 cfm carb

cam with about .480-.500 lift (dont go to big on the duration at .50 since its for a 4x4)

    good aluminum dual plan intake

smaller tube headers since your after tourqe

upgrade the ignition to something like a MSD 6AL or such

good true dual exuast with quality mufflers like flowmasters or equal

crossover pipe on the exuast would give a few more ft on the torque curve.

Just make sure that the springs on your different heads will handle a bigger cam and that the piston to valve clerance is gonna be ok.

i'm sure others will have different combos but thats the type of combo i have had on a couple of 4x4 blazers that i use to four wheel with and they ran pretty good.

Thank you Blowngoat, I don't want big tires, the biggiggist I would go would probably be 31's and, I probably will just use stock size tires. Thank's for the info, now I just gotta figure how much I'll have for the engine and how much for the rest of the truck. I want to do kind of a mixed up resto like, getting dated 1967 timing cover for my 74' Block and 68' " Mark of excellence " sticker for the door jam ( the decal color's are diffrent in 1968 than in 1967 ), the 67' ( my truck ) has an aqua color sticker and the 68' has a dark blue sticker. I want to paint it black with a teal stripe on the side. The teal would go with the dark aqua interior color. I was going to small block a 1983 Mercedes ( shown avatar ) but, the Impala motor I bought won't fit and the only small block that will fit is the Ford 302 and, I want to do this truck now so, next year for the benz.

C'mon Matt, anything will fit in anything if ya want it in their bad enough!!! Ever seen a Pinto with a 460 in it?? How about an "A" coupe with a Caddy?? Thinks Streets nailed it, somebody done mixed up yer meds again. A guy in Brookings even has a Chevette with a 502 Crate Motor, fits fine with a little trimming.....

Na, that's not a real motor, and even if it was, the bell housins would not match up . No I have not got the truck yet but, I almost know my grandfather will sell it to me because he dosent want anything to do with it and sold it once ( technicly ) to a guy near us for $25 and he never came to pick it up, that was 2 years ago. I just got to get time to ask him, probably going to be this weekend.
