1 piece rear mail seal question
I bought a Fel-Pro BS40656 rear main seal for my small block (the basic 1 piece rear man seal on Summit). I took my old seal off a while ago so I don't have anything to reference. The old seal had a spring around it, but I can't find a spot to put it that looks right. The only thing I can get it to go around is a small lip on the flywheel side of the rms housing, but it doesn't look like the spring serves any purpose.
Thanks!

Unless the seal has a spring hidden in the rubber somewhere. Pretty sure when I took it off the spring was around a lip on the seal. Maybe it was a different type of seal?

The arrow is pointing to where I put the spring but it doesn't look like it does anything.Last edited by gregsenne; 08-12-2011 at 10:52 PM. Reason: Smart phone got my words wrong!

no that is not right the spring is used under the inside on top of the seal lip . on top of the seal the spring holds pressure on seal you can not see it less your hurt or hit it very hard and it can pop out it .a side veiw of the seal would look likes this some what J < this side would be fly wheel side . this side >J this the inside part of the seal spring sits inside of seal most of the time you need to pull seal lip down with your hand to see springIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

I'm having a hard time finding where the spring would sit if it's supposed to be on the side towards the crank. Since I bought the rms kit from summit, if that rms required a spring, shouldn't the kit come with one? Makes me think I don't even need the spring.
Heres a drawing of what the seal looks like. Could I have the seal in the housing backwards? The red dot is where I got three spring in the earlier pic I posted.
Thanks for the help

Ok I just found the old rms and it is a completely different style and I can see where the spring sits on this seal, so now I'm assuming I dont need that spring. Sound right?

nope seal rides on top of the seal lip inside and next to crank go,s inside face .like said seal and spring never come as two parts spring is always in the seal and on the inside of the seal lip you never see the spring you have to bend the seal lip down by hand to see it is the new seal brown ? it would be viton ? if it did not have a spring in it new... you DO NOT use your old spring out of your old seal like cffisher saidLast edited by pat mccarthy; 08-13-2011 at 12:32 AM.

Ok. I won't worry about the spring. The new seal is gray .
Thanks for the help.
I wanted to complain about this NZ slang business, but I see it was resolved before it mattered. LOL..
