whats a 350L motor?
I just bought my double roller timing chain today from advanced auto and noticed something odd. Were it lists the engines that it fits, instead of just saying 350 they list it as a 350L. Im pretty sure that the L may be for the vin # of the car that the engine was out of, but not knowing what the original car was how do I know if I got the correct timing set?(The engine was said to be from a 69 camaro{dont know for sure })
Thank in advance, JC

The only difference in timing chains I can think of on most 350's are roller and flat tappet valve trains. LT1's and the like have a cam driven water pump so the timing set is different in order to accomodate.

yeah, I really cant think of anything that would be different for the timing set either. Anybody have any other ideas?

L is a vin code for like 1980-1986 Chevy 350's so, more than likely you got a 1979 Camero 350 engine but, follow streets suggestion just to be shure. You don't know what you've got til it's gone

heres what I found on the front pad on the block. V122OCHS. From the crappy book I have I believe this to be a 76' camaro. ( can anybody verify this?) If this is the case, do I have the correct timing set? Advanced auto was unable to help(not really surprised).
Thanks for the help so far.

Thanks for the usefull help guys, i,m going to end this topic now becuase I see it slowly going off track.
As for useless the reply [or should I just say unhelpful], The reason I go to advanced or any parts store is because even though I am a machinist that can run a 5 axis machine I still havnt been able to make my own timing chains, bearings piston rings, etc... useless

I decided to check back to see if anybody found more info and also to apollogize and clear things up.
I'm not an old bastard I'm actually 25 yrs old and trying to learn as much as I can from people who have maybe ran into these problems before. As far as coming and going, I usally check out the site at least once a day to see whats happening. I try to post only when I have a question because I believe these forums are a great way to share knowledge. Ive seen Streets reply to so many differnt topics and alot of the times he does have great info but there are also alot of times when he just likes to B.S. and joke around. When I posted this last questions , I really needed answers fast, When I was asked why I go to the parts store I kinda felt like he was wasting my time ( were the heck am I supposed to buy parts?)
Once again, i apollogize if I offended anyone here. Will somebody please relay this message to Streets, and by the way, who the hell is matt and whats wrong w/ the leather on my boots?

Ur getting confused with me and streets and CSF's post, CSF was trying to restart old troubles between me and Streets, he was trying make us and was talking about streets leather boots and Me idiolizing streets and, he was not talking about you. CSF is one that should be on your ignore list and, if he isn't you should put him there cause he wants to cause trouble. I'v had CSF on ignore for about a 1.5 months now.You don't know what you've got til it's gone

To find the info on the block you need the casting number.
The casting number is located on the REAR of the block.
You then you go to www.mortec.com. They have a little reference list that tells you what you want to know.
To tell you if you have the right part, well a part number and mnfg. would help. Without it I have no clue what you hold in your hand, and frankly, I'm afraid to ask.
The L designation could mean for a 350 late block that had a roller cam or it could stand for the VIN for a (IIRC) L48 engine. I'd find that hard to swallow though as the aforementioned late 350 block had a designation of L98 in the F- and Y-body cars (same block but no roller cam in trucks and vans for a few years) and that the same chain for the L48 is the same as the L65 and L82 and just about all first gen 350 blacks through '86 I beleive. Part number, or go to www.advanceautoparts.com and just look up the info from the block that you got by going to mortec.com. You did do that eh?
Now, it could also be just a dumb designation from the mnfg. You could go to their website a peep through to see if you could find anything there.
Was that useful enough?
