    Priming loss/fuel delivery probs?

My little monza is giving me fits again. I went out to my car at 1pm (which is when i get out of school) and Im guessing it was because of the heat outside? im not sure but my fuel pump wouldnt pick up any gas out of my tank? I took the inline off and it was dry but I stuck my finger to my fuel pump and had dad turn the key on real quick and it was sucking hard. The 3/8 rubber lines are not old enough to have collapsed i dont think. The weird thing is, I can come back at like 5pm and it cranks rite up. Ive never encountered anything like this before .. im not sure where to even start...Im gonna drop the tank this weekend and check the pickup screen and see if i cant get that old in-tank electric pump out..

    ANY THOUGHTS??

Are you pulling fuel through the old pump?

I got the same question. Because it'll never work.

I checked and a 76 Monza never came equipped with an in tank fuel pump ???? They had a engine block mounted manual fuel pump. Also it sounds like you have installed a frame mounted electric pump Is it mounted lower than the tank and as close as possible to the tank ? They are not designed to suck fuel although they will to an extent.

I mounted the pump to its factory specs which was in the trunk. and the towne coupes that came with 305,s (only come from California or places like that which is where mine is from) did have a in-tank electric fuel pump

We've already hashed this out before, haven't we? You say, "Installed to spec in the trunk", and everyone here says mount it as low as possible on the frame, below the tank if at all possible. Pull the in-tank pump, as it is a flow restriction, and it may be a flow block if the pump is frozen and cannot free wheel with the flow. Then get the electric out of the trunk, mounted as low as possible and see if your problem doesn't disappear.

    Slade,
Was your Dad's trying to suck through an OEM pump in the tank? Get that POS in-tank pump out of there first, then see if the system works OK. If it will pump strong maybe it's OK - see how long it takes to put a couple of gallons in a bucket. Not trying to bust your chops here, but it seems you keep coming back with the same problems time & time again?

Yes. and thats my plan. Ik the pump pumps really strong because i used it to get some gas out of my car for a buddy who ran outta gas on the side of the road once. but there is a old pump in the tank and has been in there for years. Im just not exactly sure how to by pass it .

And i dont consider anything you guys have to say as "busting my chops" I like to here what yall have to say about it and learning different ways to do things than my family does or i wouldnt bother asking ? lol
