sbc oil pump priming
Hey guys,
Priming question... I am putting a sbc in my off-road race truck, it is well sunk into the firewall and the roll cage goes directly above the dist. I have already put the engine/trans in the truck but realized I am not positive this engine got primed. the bottom end has been run a little but it has not been started in about 4 years since it got alum heads, new hei, intake and carb. Is there another way to prime it other then pulling it back out of the truck to pull the dist? I thought about moding the motor mounts to bring the engine back another 4in so I could make a dist access panel under the dash but decided against that so I dont have to build another new firewall.
Thanks!

If you can't go back remove the rad. or what ever is in front and go forward..I wouldn't run it if its been sitting 4 years. Even with the plugs out you could wipe out bearings.Charlie

pressurize it thru the oil pressure line fitting or any of the galley plugs around the back of the block

there's a check ball in the oil gallery above the pump which directs the oil thru the filter--the chech valve in the filter adapter will restrict the oi l from going back thru the filter and the pressure will go to the center galley where it will feed the mains vis the grooves behind the cam bearings and the rods will be fed from the mains---lifter galley and valve train will be fed from the rear cam galley outward to the two galleys that feed the lifters then up to the valve train--this actually better than some of the preoiler pump drivers as the side the distributer i s on is pressurized also instead of just dumping the oil at that spot---

Interesting never gave that a thought. So you can use an external pump and just let it run off the draing oil pan. Thanks for the info. 67 and still learningCharlie
