Need to install correct alternator bracket on my 283

I've got a 283 out of a 1966 Chevelle installed in my 1967 GMC pickup. The pickup had a 327 in it stock. The alternator bracket has not been right for a LONG time. I think it originally had an alternator bracket with the smog pump, but I'm not sure about that. Over the years, the truck has eaten countless alternators and belts. Being dumb and broke, I've rigged it all sorts of ways to work over the years, but it's never been right.

Now, I'm still dumb, but I've got a little extra money to do it right. The current setup includes one bolt into the stock left side exhaust manifold. I'm hoping to eventually get headers, so that bolt hole probably wont be there.

My question - is there a standard piece I can get from Summit or some other outlet that will bolt right on, align correctly and solve my alternator alignment issues? The truck has no power accessories, so the alternator belt is the only thing turning the water pump. Currently the alternator is on the drivers side. It has limited adjustment because it bumps into the valve cover. Here is a picture of the engine, but I don't think you can see much of the alternator brackets.

    Thanks for any ideas.

Why is it eating alternators and belts? Alignment issue? Bracket flexing? There are ways to fix either of these issues.

As for a new (correct) bracket, I am sure that you can find one at swap meets, or maybe places like OPG, Classic Chevy places or even Summet or the likes.

Power Master Powermaster Alternator Bracket - JCWhitney

this bracket bolts to those lower 2 holes on the block on either side---alternator actually hangs kinda low, could be a problem with cross steering links on some lowered vehicles( like my wifes 33 ford)

Are you sure you have your belt right, and the alternator mounted like OEM? It seems to be waaay high and wide for no reason, making your single belt pretty long. Your picture shows space for a second belt on the crank & water pump pulleys, and the purpose of that is to provide some redundancy on the cooling system drive but you'll need an idler of some type for adjustment. Like Bug says, you ought to be able to find brackets that will work pretty easy, either used or new. It's not like they only made a few SBC's.

On the old heads with no accessory holes in the ends you're limited on what will work. Might look at some of the race car (dirt track) setups and see what you would have room for. There are high mount, mid mount, and low mount alternator brackets made for the sbc's if they will work out under the hood of a pickup. Check out Speedway Motors or Southwest Speed and see if they might have something that will fit your truck.
