Do you have an old, used pump that you know is good? Bolt it on and try it. I contend that it is entirely possible for two pumps to be bad......indeed, it is possible for two dozen or two hundred pumps to be bad if they came from the same batch at the factory.

i seen the pickup as far as 1 inch off the pan floor egine did not come apart for this but i fixed it as well . i was thinking it very well could be your oil pump bypass seen this . but after reading it i do not think thats what it is oil pumps are very simple and work very good most all the time. pump could suck air around the tube cheap pickups do not have a press and do need to be welded all the way around the pump body but thats not it . were i would look is the crank did you check that all oil feed holes in the crank are a good ways away from the edge of the crank radius with some bearings that are not as wide and the tang off set on some rods move the bearing shell over more then a stock bearing . with a narrow bearing and rod with a after market crank you can have a big oil leak. i have sent back a crank back for this not very long ago. the crank never made it in the engine just never looked right on that journal it was the first feed hole from the oil pump....big leak... till i check it with a narrow bearing on that rod could of been over looked easly as it was in QC. i will not say who,s crank as they paid for me to keep my mouth shut this happens alot . mostly with piston companys but i have a hell of a list . other engines i seen this do this was a 509 bbc guy had a 6 point nut for the main cap holding the oil pump body off the base of main cap . back cam bearing on a 400 sbc did not have any press . by pass hang up on a pontaic .i have had loose oil pumps well to pump gear . but that would never drop the oil like you posted the pump would have the be worn past junk . seen front gallery plugs out will do the same thing. as for the pickups for pan just did two bbc ths week one with a mildon that still makes a good pan and pickup that i put a heavy tack on it other a cheap P.O.S pickup made in china pan still made in the Usa ?? mildon had a good press on it use tig i first tack the pickup then take the cover off for welding keep from cooking the spring . i still use and love my play doe..i used it this week same can for 20 years it.s seen many big bbc and sbc add drop of oil to it now oil base use the bag the pump came in to cover the pump screen from getting press with putty i shoot for 3/8 from pick up from pan bottom seen to many dumb ass.s over the year use a floor jack under a oil pan.the cheap and not so cheap oil pans will suckup the pan up. if closer i seen it many times took a long time to figure it out. was thinking it was just stuff moving around past 7000 RPM , if all fails pull pan off run the oil pump with primer have a tray under engine you will need a oil source and watch were oil is passing

Thank you Pat. Oil hole location is not something I had checked or even considered. The idea about running the pump with the pan off sounds excessively messy, but might just be what I need to figure this out.

A thing to try---time how long it takes for the pressure to fall and shut it off, wait 10 15 minutes and try again---same thing and time? now add 2 or 3 qts and see if it takes longer time---------If you want to be exact and truly scientific use 4 extra qts (1 in filter) and the time should double-----Quite possible the Canfield heads don't have the drainback holes drilled or they are in wrong place------------also look for casting flash/junk in the drains in the valley--------
