That was exactly all the info I was hoping to get. I do plan on still building it myself. Have all the tools a lift and all. Plus I work in a parts department so I can get some of the parts a bit cheaper. Thanks glen for the info. Any other info from you guys is also greatly appreciated.

You told us that the block is .060 over so you’ll need 4.060” pistons. White Performance Machine has an ebay special for a balanced assembly including crank, pistons, rings, connecting rods, flex plate, damper, and big bearings for $769. This assumes a 3.75” stroke so you need to make sure that your block has been machined for such. SBC Chevy 383 Forged Rotating Assembly 4 060 Bore 12 CC Dish 2pc RMS | eBay

Get a new oil pump and pickup that already welded to the pump – another $70 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/se...make/chevrolet

Summit sells their aluminum heads for $995 - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-162109/overview/ I’d buy new bolts for another $80 and a good gasket set will add another $75 or so.

Cam and lifters are all over the place – however, as mentioned above a roller retrofit is a good idea. Summit sells a COMP Cams retrofit kit with the cam, lifters, pushrods, springs, timing set and all the accoutrements for $900 - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cc...make/chevrolet

So now we have the major long-block pieces and we’re at $2,900, plus additional machine shop charges to relieve for a 3.75 stroke, deck the surfaces, and install cam bearings – probably +/- $350 so we’re at $3,250.

Intake – Edelbrock 7104 Performer RPM is a great choice with a 750 Q-Jet (electric choke). This combo will be about $525.

    HEI distributor - $100

All the “other little things” i.e, fasteners, spark plugs and wires, water pump, etc. will be +/- $500 and that assumes that you have all sheet metal, (pan, valve covers, front cover) the tools you’ll need as well an engine stand and a nice, warm, well lit place to build this engine.

Soooo. We’re looking at about $4,400 smackers – still want to build it yourself? If so, you may want to search this site for small block build threads as there have been a lot of them and you’ll find all kinds of gems concerning cleaning the block, painting the block, assembly lubes, keeping it clean, etc., etc., etc…

Let us know what you decide!

    Best,

comes time for roller lifters and cam let me know i can beat that deal .and for the hole sbc deal i can beat or match it White and the rest and a hole 383 can happen to . as for the $4400. for about that price i can build you a 454 to a 489 cid .mark 6 bbc roller cam engine .core block ands head casting every part new scat crank .scat rods . speed pro hyper pistons other then some Gm tin that would be roller cam .roller lifters.roller rockers. pump fuel Vtech 454 re built heads reworked with ss valve weiand steath intake .milodon or morso oil pan this would come with 3/8 .080 custom push rods . a set of Comp Cam roller rocker ultra pro set as some other rockers . i have not been happy with . comp cams there about the best out there now for the money this 489 would do what you want .if not i have bigger stuff

I'd buy these NKB heads before I'd buy the Summit heads. 645 bucks for the pair, assembled. Add guide plates and you're golden. A well-built 383/388 should make 475 horsepower with them easily.

Greetings from Jacksonville Fl. I just bought a real beautifual car. This is a complete restore from the ground up. It's a 1946 Ford Coupe. It does not have an engine or transmission and the chassie is pretty much shot. Can any recommend what newer type car/chassie I can put this body on without too much modification?

Since it's your first post we won't slam you to hard but.. you'd be much better off starting with an introduction thread and tell us something of your car and your plans for it.. instead of "barging" into some other guys thread!

My apologies Gents, as you can tell I am new at this. I just logged on and saw your posts. My name is Dan from Jax Fl and I recently bought my Dream car I hope to rebuild. It's a 1946 Ford Coupe. Too much of the car has been changed since it's Moonshine running days to make it original. The guy I bought it from stripped it and raced it for a while then pretty much pulled everything out and let it rust. The body is in fair shape but the frame is shot. I figure I can start there. I was hoping someone might be able to guide me on what other frame I could use with little modification. I plan to build this with my son and grandson and one day, pass it on. Thanks again.

What's the casting number on the heads? It's cast into the heads, under the valve covers, between the valves. You really need to know the static compression ratio before you can intelligently choose a cam for a motor, so you need to know the cc's of the chambers on the heads to calculate the SCR.
