305?, 350?, 427?, 454??
hi guys ...boy am i glad i found this site!!
well, ive crossed from the imports, to hotrod/cruising scene ! i just bought a 62 stepside chevy c10, w/the engine out. he gave me an engine. its a v6 vortec, from a 97 1500 pick up that his son wraped around the tree. came w/engine, tranny, drive shaft, and rear end. ive read up on this engine and don't know if i want it but i keep coming back to it cause of mpg!! also not much hp either(192hp,24xptq)! but i want the rumble of a v8, and the hp of one too w/good mpg i told him that i was probably gonna sell it and buy me a v8. i also asked him if the tranny will work as well as the rear end. he said hell yea! he said that the block of that 4.3 is the smaller version of the 350, so in terms it will work well. sorry for rambling on, but i guess what im trying to ask is...should i keep this engine (cause of mpg), get a 305(cause of v8+mpg), or 350+(cause of big hp )) i really hate the way these gas prices are going up so im leaning towards a 305. can i make it run a high 11 in 1/4 w/ not to much work(im kinda on a budget). and will every thing hook up right (tranny, drive shaft, and rear end)???
also what is the 4.3ltr vortec v6 worth? i wanna do like a trade in for a v8 at junk yard type deal!
thanks guys, and any input is appretiated
p.s. i read on another forum that they took a v6 vortec and w/ a supercharger and some mods(STOCK HEADS though) made over 500hp! that was some food for thought when i heard about it! again sorry for all this rambling!!two things i came here to do....drinks some beer, and kick some ass.........except we are all out of beer.

I would go with a 4.3l V6. They have fairly good power, and you can mod them to decent HP if you want too. However, an overdrive is almost essential nowadays. That will really make a difference.Right engine, Wrong Wheels

how does the 305 compare w/ the v6 vortec? are they like neck and neck w/stock comparison? what about w/ mods? yea i guess i might go w/ teh v6 but i kinda feel that it would be working its arse off cause my 62 looks like it pretty heavey since its all non fiberglass!two things i came here to do....drinks some beer, and kick some ass.........except we are all out of beer.

I say go with a 454. if you want rumble and torque(great acceleration)
davidh......What do you think of as good mileage? 15mpg?
I've had a 305 and 350. the 350 is better on fuel. much better intake and exhaust system. plus more torque to move my est. 4600 pound truck.
the 350 even has 3.73 rear gears. with the 305 I had 3.08:1 rear gears.
I get 12-13mpg.
I'm wotkin towards building a 454 for my truck. with an electric fan and a cam for torque and mileage. I'm shooting for the same 12-13mpg on regular pump gas.had a rebuilt 355SB chevy
it lasted 42,000km
Got another rebuilt 355SB
it lasted 62km.
I still have not had a powerful engine.
slowly building a quicker truck

Welcome to CHR David. Like Power said, what is your definition of good gas mileage??? Running 11's and good gas mileage with a chebbie pickup shouldn't even be in the same sentence!!!! A stock v-6 or a low budget small block sure isn't gonna do the job. You wanna run 11's while running an overweight tank down the track it's gonna take a lot of motor, lots of chassis work, and lots of $$$$$$$$Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

I see Streets is the head jackass around here.
David, keep the 4.3L V6, it will make power easyer than a 305, and better mpg. Save up for a Vortec SC and then you will be set!Last edited by FASTCHEVY; 04-04-2004 at 12:14 AM.

Realize that 192 hp is wheel hp and most 350's are rated at 165 whp from the factory. Keep the 4.3, unless you're willing to fork out over 2 grand, you're not likely to get a motor that will make more than 192 whp.
