thank you for replying cffisher.im a bit confused I have never done this before. I have looked at a lot of sights on the web. I am looking to find out what size the motor is and what it came in . so that I have a application to buy parts for it like timing chain. etc.I have been plowing with it for about 15 yrs. oil pan leaks I have always timed it for a small block I be leave 4 1/2 be fore tdc. timing cover is missing timing indicator . and I have a stock replace meant so I figured if I am going to replace the oil pan and the timing cover I might as well do the gears so any help would be great. thank you bob

Robert,
Welcome to CHR! Are you looking on the back of the engine, driver's side, just below the head for the casting number? The date code is also on the back, I think a little more toward the center.

Robert,
Welcome to the forum. I have never seen a SBC that was timed that slow. SBC engines like a lot of timing. Most I have done at 10-14 Deg BTDC with vacuum disconnected at distributor. When timed at 4.5 BTDC they are usually very sluggish, poor fuel economy and run hot... sometimes exhaust will glow at night.Ed in Jeffersonville, IN
