    Cool 283 Hp?

About how much HP would a 283, bored .030 over, with 350 heads, 350 4 bl intake and a 620 cfm carb put out? And is that too much carb? Would I get better performance out of a smallerone? I even toyed with a 100 HP shot of juice.........

You get better performance from a bigger one. a 283 with 350 heads is going to get horrible compression. if your really set on this, shave the heads, get a smaller carb, and watch your cam. but if it was me, i would get a 327 or bigger.

    The block is 64-67
And I think the heads are fairly newer.
I decoded the casting numbers once, but I can't find the paperwork now. I'll look for them. I know it came out of a Malibu.....can't remember what year.
    casting # 3849852 (block)
    casting # 83417369 (heads)
    casting # 340261 F123 (intake)

I would love to find a bigger engine drg84, but I'm on a bit of a buget. I have 7 kids to feed. As much as I love my new found hobby, my kids have to eat... I just happened to have this 283 sitting here is why I asked. I might just put it all together and stick it in a Chevette>>>>>>>

I once saw a chevette with a blown 355 in it ,Bad News Man the guy couldn't get it to go straight . If you can get 1 H.P. per cubic inch you wouldn't be doing to bad with the 283 but the compression is going to be lower with the big chambered 350 heads . Milling the heads will help, use headers 1 1/2 -1 5/8 max not to much exhaust either 2 1/8-2 1/4 max. 280- 300 H.P. is possible on a budget. A engine builder once told me 100 C.F.M. for every 1,000 R.P.M.'s on 350 chevy i t's pretty close and pretty simple ,it work's .If all you have is the 620 C.F.M ., try it , it's only a little bit oversized but should work if your going to rev it.

Wow, 7 kids, sorry man. Diddnt know. Anyway, for that engine, if you can get the 350 heads shaved, go for it. Also, thinner head gaskets help on occasion. I think Hot Rod did an article a while back on a 502 chevette. it was unreal. Good luck on your 283, and watch the kids.

Yeah, I seen that episode. They stuck a 500 Caddy in a Chevette and raced a bunch of Corvettes. They all lost.........

That chevette in Hot Rod had a 500 caddy built out of the junk yard and dropped dead center of the car with the carb about where the dash would be. Super fast though I think 11's for under three grand! Imagine that kinda horse with a small block. They had an 8.75 ford rear if I remember right.. seen it go on TV and seemed to go straight for a short wheelbase. Be worth lookin in their archieves HUH?

    350 heads

The compression height of a 283 is 1.80 and the 350 is 1.56 .Not sure of the exact milling specs ,but when you bring them to the machine shop and tell them what your trying to do, they should put you on the right track.

I have a 283 from a 57 Bel Air that has had the heads shaved .50 by the previous owner. It will be going into my wifes 58 GMC shorty next summer. I have yet to run the engine, but it only has 500 miles on a rebuilt before the original owner swapped the engine out for a crate ZZ4
