harmonic balancer fit?
Happy Easter! We're building a 383 stroker and we are having a fitment issue with the harmonic balancer. It's all been balanced and ready to be put together but with the double roller timing chain, the balancer will not go on all the way. It seems like the end of the crank is a good 1 - 1.5 in from the front edge of the balancer and we're concerned it's not right. I'm sure with a single roller timing chain, the fitment will be right, but we really want to keep the double roller. I'll try to add a diagram of what i'm talking about to give ya'll a better idea. I'll ask. Have you tried the chain cover with the dual roller chain.?.?
Maybe the cover will not clear also?
If it does, then you'll need to make a decision. Either re-engineer the gear spacing (fore & aft) or just go with what fits.

The lower timing chain sprocket has a bevel id for the back side to clear radius on crank-
The balancer hub is a very tight press fit onto the crank and needs a special install tool to do it correctly-----
Your not hanging up on keyway?

If the chain sprocket is completely seated on the crank, and the balancer is seated against the sprocket, you've got all
you're gonna get. And no, the crank snout never comes all the way to the front of the balancer.
I can't give you and exact number, but an inch or so back sounds about right.

thanks for the info. I think the thing that concerns us the most is, when looking at the diagram, the crank doesn't make it to the "meatier" part of the balancer. We'll double check the sprocket but pretty sure everything is in as far as it can go.
A skip is a huge crate with chains on it at all four corners, the only way I know to shift it is to hire a Hiab. A Hiab is a small crane mounted at either end of a truck's tray...some pick up at...
