If your concened about key shear strength for turning the cam/oil pump/dist, The keyway only indexes the gear and the being sandwiched tightly between the front hub and crank main journal is what transfers the torque. If you ever find a sheared key in a timing gear it probably had to do with loose frond dampner hub. They really need to be tight because there is a lot of harmonics from the cam and springs-------
