On a lot of the GM and Mopar rear ends the gear ratio and application data is stamped on one of the axle tubes.....in very small font and usually a PIA to find and read.

Thanks for that, Mike. I've not run into the info being stamped on an axle tube, but it makes better sense than the tags which were rarely put back on once the bolts were out. It would indeed be a PIA to find on an old, road weary rear end, I would think.
