If he uses the stock heads he won't need them as the mounting holes are there. Early sbc heads did not have mounting holes which makes them a PITA to use. The main problem with many later castings is that they are thin wall and large combustion chambers for emission standards. I replaced the heads on the 350 in my 76 Vette with 624 castings even though they are prone to crack. From information I sourced the cracking mostly occurs with 2.02 valves and mine are 1.94's and so far I've had no problems and the Vette runs at a constant 200º.Ken Thomas
