Poll on HP and torque for this combo take a guess!
Hey guys I'm new to the board here and wanted to say hi. I am a long time muscle car nut and I have built many fast vehicles some old time muscle and others new age tech. Turbo, superchared, EFI and carbed. But I have gone back to the days of lore when I missed the beautiful sound of a rumbling V8. Now what better way too enjoy that than when you get offered a 68 Chev 1/2 ton street truck with no rust and a muncie M22 instead of the truck trans and a 327, for free? Ok now since this is where the fun began I was driving it home and the old nylon on the timing gear broke causing it too stall. ok well I was just going to install a new double roller and drive it for a bit but you know how these things start one thing always leads to another. Also found that the intake cam lobe was flat so now i'm up to a cam well I love a good lope as much as the next guy then come to find out I have the thin casting 624 crap heads NNNNOOOO! So now we're up too getting some heads as well with 64cc chambers. I was going to buy a set of WP sportsmanII heads when i stubbled across a set of fully ported I mean really ported the guy said they were ported by a shop in cali for a car that was in NASCAR. I do some porting as well and these were among the best i have seen they had 2.08 stainless intake, and 1.60 exhaust both back cut bronze valve guides screw in studs, guide plates, and double comp cam springs good for 560 lift. The heads were all redone and ready to be bolted on and the guy needed a rear end for his truck i had a spare so we swaped I figured i got the better end of the deal i had a shop that i trusted check the heads they were perfect no cracks, surface was perfect, the ports were all smooth the bowl work was what really impressed me. I should have had the bench flowed but didn't have time. Anyway I did set them next to a set of edelbrock RPM aluminum heads and the ports on the old fuelies were bigger all the way to the valve bowl area the exhaust had been reshaped to a more of a D exit as well. Anyway got my heads so since I am this far into it I figure pistons, rings, rods, and all are just a few days longer and there you have it. The specs are as follows, the heads i think I have given alot of detail on, The cam is a Comp Cams 286 H Magnum with 236 by 236 at .50 duration, 286 advertised, 490 by 490 In and EX lift but i am running 1.6 Comp magnum rockers as well making it 522 on both. I am running a comps double roller chain, ross pistons flattops with speedpro moly rings, steel crank that was nitraded, balanced, and 10 under. I'm using steel shims for the heads and copper coded them. New ARP studs for the heads and the rods and mains. Everything was balanced and blueprinted I added a Torker II intake, I don't know much about it but they had it for sale for $75 new. I wanted a single plane and i ported it to match the heads. Then topped it off with an MSD HEI distributor running 34 degrees total advance no vaccum, a 1 in poly spacer and a Holley 650 HP double pumper running 65 front jets and 66 rear. Gases are expelled out of 1 3/4 super comp headers through Ultraflow 2 1/2 mufflers and tails all mandrel bent. Using the 180 thermostat and the performance edlebrock water pump and a stock dampner. What dampner would anyone suggest I need that replaced because the old one seems worn. Now I was wondering what are the guesses on how much power I am making at the fly???? I have 3.73 rear gears and all I know is the darn thing even with 295/60/15s on the rear its hard to hold traction!! It runs great all the way too bout 6400 RPMs. But I went with the smaller engine because its just not done very often and being I have been helping these young kids build 200-500 HP out of their 1.3 rotaries, 2.0 hondas, and even 3.0 V6s why would it be so hard to do the same with my 327 NA. I have built and seen quite a few of the 1.8 honda NA making over 200 at the wheels so I had to see what i could do with a 30 over 327. I will be dynoing it next week lets see whos the best guess. Desktop dyno which i have used for years and has been quite accurate if you can imput the right figures is usually within a 10 % margin + or - and it said 413 HP and 399 torque with the above engine. Ow and just for the mentioning I am assuming it is around 10 to 10.5 to 1 with the ross flattop pistons, 64 CC chambers, .015 steel shim gasket. But if anyone knows a better way to figure it out without tearing it back down for the deck height take a guess. But I'm sure its got to be close.Last edited by bad327; 05-05-2004 at 08:29 AM.

To answer your question, either an elastomer or silicone damper. Whichever you chose, I would be sure it was SFI approved.

I do not have pics yet i did take pics of the build up and will get them developed and scanned in. I do have a BIG problem though and need to know the best course of action. I went with a 350 SFI approved dampner from ATI. I was taking the old one off and the loaner tool I was using to remove the old one broke and slammed into the inner threads inside my crank. I removed it safly enough and checked the threads and found them damaged I bought a tap and tapped it back out and bought a new bolt for it as well but I went to install the new dampner and pulley and the bolt will not torque it keeps going what are my options here need to know. Never had this happen to me, don't want to take it out and I do have enough room to helicoil is that viable option I just want to know if anyone has had this happen and what they did is going too a slightly larger bolt an option either. Anything so I do not have to remove the engine again. Thanks guys this is an awesome sight!!!!

Okay I justed talked to the guy that acually had the porting done he said that a David Vizard was the one that did the porting for him on the heads they were done using a flow bench. I was pretty impressed I looked up the guy and he has written a few books on small block chevs and power building etc etc.
I once went to Hawaii on a submarine kinda sucked cause it had a screen door on it and the only way to fix the thing was with a left handed cresent wrench. Once we did though we got stuck on the train tracks going to Maui so we gave up and went home in a rowboat i made using a tampon and duct tape.
