We run gear drives in about 90 percent of the engines we build for our customers in the shop. As a rule we like .010 in our small and big block Chevy engines we build. A gear drive is more of a personal choice but we recommend them to our customers and they love the NOISE! LOL! I have had one in our shop car (AKA my daily driver) for going on 10 years now with absolutely no problems. We run Pete Jacksons cause we get them at cost but there are others that are equally as good. Run one you'll love it! And good luck with your build.......

A belt drive is a much better option. It is quieter than even a timing chain set, absorbs less power than chain or gears. Consider a belt for a real race engine, especially for rock solid timing. Chains and gears can let timing walk back and forth a half of a degree if you get harmonics, a belt drive dampens harmonics out. For a basic street engine it does not matter.http://www.truckpulls.com

Double idle gear type (i.e.: Pete Jackson)? .008 will work fine.
Single idler type (i.e.: Milodon)? Believe it or not, they recommend a strip of newspaper between the cam gear and idler and another between the drive gear and idler for sizing. So, you figure a piece of newspaper is about .003 thick. Two would equate to .006 ish.
I agree with the boyz, why have the extra noise? That's why I use a Milodon (not meant to be a sales pitch), but very quiet. But then I added the blower...go figure.

They have quiter running GDs' as well.
Not all units have that Blower noise. lol
If only they made one for a 318. Instead I have to make due with Milodin Cheater Gears.Last edited by MoparMadman; 09-03-2004 at 12:54 AM.

"Til the belt breaks and screws your valve train up".
Ahhhhh, but that is why your sposed ta change em every so often !!! But I'd still never run one on the street a chain & gears work just fine and I'd rather listen to the stereo rather than the whine from a gear drive.

True.
As I said though there are GD units that don't produce much noise.
Kid rodders love the blower whine without the expense/ Which is why they have the "noisy" units. lol
If I had to I guess I would use the outdated roller system.
But my 318 is gonna get the only thing available to put in it. Unless someone makes a GD unit that I don't know about it's gonna have to be the Milodon unit.
Just hope that it's not noisyAny dolt with a Torch and Welder can customize a car.
