gearhead cam question
im sure its been brought up before but i didnt dig.
i have a 350 high nickel content '010' 4 bolt, 40 over, 10:1, balanced with good pistons, #882 heads with good valves & springs, etc &"" i want a thumper cam that will work in this basicilly stock engine.""
what would you suggest?
how about the old 327 30/30 SB cam that is now made in hydralic?
how about the old 370 horse 1970 LT-1 cam?
anyone have any first hand experience with this?
--it has a goooooood 700R4 with 2500 stall trans & 3 1/2:1 gears as of now. i have 3:70 gears i can replace with also. 29" rear tires.
its just for cruisin (not very concerned with performance or gas mileage. i just want it to run but sound tough, i already have the HI-PO reputation so i wont need to turn on!) i have other vehicles with power i can drive, ive spent LOTS of time up in front of the judge for putting on city block long tire smoking displays, ive spent my w/end nights changing to sticky rear tires at the car wash (sneaky like) then out looking for action etc... LOL!
WHAT CAN I GET FOR SUGGESTIONS? ? ?Last edited by L00se Deuce; 09-29-2004 at 10:58 PM.

OK nobodys givin up any info.
a couple years ago "some guy" rebuilt his 350 in his impala. a 9:1 engine pretty much stock & he put a thumper cam in & drove it everyday & it sounded "just right" no problems!
i knew i should have got that cam number from him BUT i guess ill find out my question because ive already installed a 30/30 1964 365 hoese 327 cam in my 350.
will it run? if i do revvvvv it will it blow the tops off my valve covers? broken rockers? bent push rods? no power?
ILL FIND OUT!!!

people get confused in thinking putting a CAM in a vehicle is gonna change everything....as in power, sound etc,its not that simple....you have to take a look at the milleage..rings,pistons,cam bearings and by the way..those heads.well they suck...they don't flow for shit and thats what you need for a decent cam..then you talking lifters, guides ,push rods..etc .you can not put a new cam in on worn out bearings, timing gear etc......people think 100 dollar cam gonna give em some thump,it might sound diff, but if U don't have all else in line for it to work, something is gonna give and come out your exhaust...i noticed you say a friend put a cam in a 'rebuild'..thats crucial.....new parts....not worn..its simple mathematics bro.....good luck.....ps if want it to sound tough .get some heads that can allow flow/compression pistons ..along with valve train ,stainless steel exhaust via flowmasters.then you will KNOW what i am talking about...lift vs duration.....simple enuff..good luck....you lookin for action, come up my way.....8 and 7 seven second STREET LEGAL'' cars..a did i mention the 1/4 not the 1/8th...you say its not for racing but then U looking for action,by the way that 700r is a shit tranny for perf..not to bust your bubble,........good gas mileage tranny though=what it was built for.....take care man.....imo ..ty

"WOW" REALLY freaky man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i guess you didnt understand! (RE-READ)
what i have is a fresh 350 nothing real fancy with very good quality internals & im sporting those sucky common ol 882 heads with good valves & i just want a little lobe to the engine! THIS ENGINE IS STILL ON THE STAND!!! NEVER RUN! I GOT IT ON A CAR DEAL & PICKED IT UP DIRECTLY FROM THE BUILDERS. they rebuilt it with good stuff for the previous owner, balanced with good pistons etc... & ALL I WANT IS MAYBE A THUMPER CAM! (WHICH ONE WORKS?) just a little lope!
THATS ALL MAN!!!
THATS ALL I WANT! --- RUMP RUMP!
i wanted an old gearhead small block dude to give me some advice.
The cat i was talking about with the impala just put a cam in his junk work car & IT SOUNDED GOOD (i liked it) he drove it everyday & it ran!!!!!! he had a garage full of nice cars & he tooled around in this old beast but hes gone & i now cant ask him any questions!
my trans DOSE NOT SUCK AT ALL!!! yours might but mines goooooooooood! its the good 700R4 case! how many have you rebuilt? this cat i had rebuild mine has done thousands & does em for dirt trackers & drag racers all the time & guys drive in from all over to get him to rebuild! this rebuild cost me some good $$$!!!
i had a nice 700R4 i wanterd him to go through & he said oh no we wont use this one. heres the style case you need so i went & got a good one for rebuilding! THEN i spent a good 2 weeks knocking the case down & smoothing it out & polishing it out JUST LIKE CHROME!
i dont care about any street racin with some dudes that have 25K in a car they would have to get a gun & force someone to buy it from them for 10K LOL!!!
whats an 1/8 mile?
you just didnt understand........ i have other vehicles!!! i have POWER & another with POWER & OTHERS i need BiG octane to drive! ----- this car im talking about is my cruiser im building! air/heat, polished stainless exhaust, chrome all over, a nice ALL STEEL 34 3 window early ford V8! WITH EVERYTHING I MIGHT ADD: original deluxe dash, ash tray & cigar lighter still intact. original deluxe garnish mouldings that are chrome, perfect original grill, original hood w/top louvered, original seat, all 4 windows still open, perfect original windshield frame (chrome again) all 4 fenders are ORIGINAL (came on this car new) ....... all the good stuff man! & ALL I WANT IS A CAM THAT WILL MAYBE THUMP!!! i dont care about mileage or smoking the tires. i just did that an hour ago in a healthy 454 i drove to work today. i know all about heads that flow & i gave up some nice 441s to a guy who NEEDED THEM! just want a THUMPER SOUND THATS ALL!!!Last edited by L00se Deuce; 10-08-2004 at 09:21 PM.

292 comp will lump it up a bit or maybe a 280 will give better driveability and a slight lope a dual pattern (extreme energy) might help those gawdawfull 882 exaust ports to flow more compression will also give a little more attitude to the exaust tonevec

Hey Loose..I'd check out an Isky MEGA 280 on a 106 LS. They're available through summit. Install it on a 104 degree center and it will idle against your 2500 rpm converter and the idle "sounds" will leave people lookin' to see who just pulled up...Good Luck

The ISKY 292 duration with .505 lift and 108 lobe seperation sounds great also, and it will let your motor scream assuming you have all of the others parts in order to handle it.

I still believe the best way to select a cam is use one of the spec sheets the manufacturers have available. Fill it out, let the cam experts make their reccomendation.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Nothing like a DEMAND for information.

Although the old cams that you mention were good in their day, they are way behind now with the newer stuff that's available. In my opinion, a good choice would be a CompCams Extreme Energy XE274H. Should fill the bill nicely.www.brownsperformance.com

I hope you find the cam you need, i would recommend lunati, maybe even go with a solid cam, more power in my opinion.
