    Stainless Exhaust

    Hey Guy's ;
    Has anyone installed Stainless Exhaust on their Cars ? I'm looking at installing 2 1/2 " on my coupe and running the round smooth tube mufflers with the ceramic wool insode to prevent burn/blow out, anyone done this , TIG or MIG welded ? Would like it smooth looking with the minimal amount of Clamps, would you swedge the ends to slide in / Flanges ? How about your ideas, and suppliers your happy with, I've looked at both Stainless Specialties and Stainless Works, Thanks Guys.

    I've bought all my mufflers(12-15) from stainless specialties and my S.S. pipe from them also. I TIG welded everything. Never had a problem (although they are a little more expensive than others)
    Keep smiling, it only hurts when you think it does!

    Chevy 37;
    Thanks for the response, Yes I've seen Stainless Specialties at several shows, they've got really nice products, the fella at the show is somewhat Obnoxious though. Sometimes even Belligerent . Guess the consumer is supposed to over look that.
    Which mufflers did you choose, what engine is in your Chev. and are you pleased with the sound, ? I'm building a 32 -3 Window Coupe and it'll have a 350 , mild cam maybe a TPI, I want it to sound like a HOT ROD, yet not have to Yell at my wife while traveling, " She doesn't like that " did you have them Bell the Pipe ends to aid in assembly? or did you TIG all of the joints ? What do you recommend ? Is that your Truck on your post and do you have more pictures, if so it looks like a nice Ride !

    Watch out. Stainless Specialties is probably more expensive because they use better material. You know, 316L or 316 instead of 304. So, don't be tricked into buying cheap stainless thinking stainless is stainless. The best would be 410 but who can afford that? Inconel would be even better. If you want the best quality welds, you've got to use backup flux on the inside of the pipes, but who cares about the quality of the weld on the inside. As long as it holds exhaust it's ok by me. You can mig tig or gas it and you don't need to use clamps unless you want the system to be easily removed. If you want it to be smooth, just focus on getting good penetration during the weld and grind the crowns off.

    re; S.S. Exhaust.

    Thanks Guy's, this is another source I've found and have heard good reports on their service and products, but was hoping there was 1st hand dealings with then, they have a street rod kit available also and I'll include its link. it's listed on the home page under " New Products "

    76 GMC , Yes I understand the different types of S.S. and am still learning, but the 304 should be OK for a Rod should it not ? the 321 is probably too expensive, Stainless Specialties uses 304 if I'm not mistaken, I did plan to use a few clamps to facilitate future maint. if needed and accessability.
    Tech. Thanks for the Link, looks like this is mainly geared up for racing , but nonetheless have quite a large supply and good info too.

    316 is considered marine grade because it is more corrosion resistant. There may be more polishing involved with 304 to keep it looking sharp. The L eg. 316L or 308L means low carbon. It has less tensile strength and will be a little easier to work with as a result. No decrease in corrosion resistance, however. It's cheaper, too.
