Mufflers
Guys,
I really enjoy the forum. These guys are very knowledgeable on the deuce. I am building a five window with a 383 Chevy and 700R4 trans. Would some of you give me your opinion on a good muffler to run that is not too loud at highway speeds? Also, is a brake booster going to make it too difficult to get a 2 1/2" exhaust system routed through the crossmembers? These are 1 1/2" round tubing. I will be using a triangulated four link rear suspension with a 9" Ford rear end. Will there be room to run the exhaust over the axle housing, or should I run tailpipes under the housing? I will be using a Tanks stainless 15 gallon gas tank. I was hoping to run a rear sway bar if I can find room. Any help you guys can give me will be appreciated. Does anyone have a good picture or pictures of their chassis? Thanks.

I wouldn't run the exhaust under the housing! U need to try to tuck it up next to the body! The last 32 we built didn't have tailpipes we just dumped them before the axle! As far as the mufflers go just go with a flowmaster 50 or 60 series they should be fairly quite!

Several years ago I read a comparo (in Hot Rod?) that tested a few brands. The winner was an OEM unit from a turbo Corvair! Least back pressure and quiet. Every time I'v had to rework exaust I have used these. I just had a pair put on my 351 and I like 'em! Nice burble at idle, very smooth at speed. And the price is right. Some day I be shinin' in the Boulavard windows

mufflers
Guys,
Thanks for replying. I hope others will reply. I want to get this part of the build right. I will sacrifice the power brake booster to get the installation right, and I certainly don't want anything too loud. Has anyone run the "Mac" brand of muffler? I am building a full fendered car and think I should run the exhaust out the back.
I want to run 2 1/2" stainless, including mufflers. Does anyone else have suggestions or opinions? I appreciate any help. Thanks

I'm just finishing a 32 5 window, full fendered, 383 / 700R4, and I ran 2 1/2" off the headers thru 40 series Flowmasters and into 2 1/4" tailpipes. The guy that did my exhaust is a magician and ran the tailpipes with prebends up over the rearend and into megs that end in about the center of my gas tank. Looks great! As far as quiet goes, well I don't know, but I';ve got the identical setup on my roadster and it sounds great! I used that really good insulation, like Dynomax, called B-Quiet ( but less expensive!) that comes from an outfit in Saskatchewan and it keeps it pretty quiet in there. Good luck!"nobody likes a top on a roadster, but it's nice to have one in the trunk when you need it!"See us at www.topsters.com

Thanks for replying. This info will certainly help. I am still wondering if anyone is running a brake booster. I have been watching the forum topic on car weights and am beginning to think that I should use a booster. Does anyone have ideas as to the best location? Thanks again for replying.

I used Flowmaster Hushpowers on my 5 window. Smaller diameter and great sound. Makes the fit easier in a So-Cal chassis, with the ladder bars and all. Went over the rear end as well. Since the entire exhaust is Jet Hot coated I also used exhaust insulators from summit over the rear end, All silver with stainless clamps, looks great. Also insulated with sound deadener and normal insulation.

I am also thinking of running a power booster on my 31 coupe. The car's all steel and running fenders with a rumble seat and saddle tanks. I believe there is enough room to install a 7" single diaphram booster. It will move the pedal assy over about 2 1/2" from it's current position. In a 32, the chassis is wider than a model A, so I would bet you will have plenty of room. My car stops well, but takes more pedal pressure than I would like. I have also thought about going to a smaller master cylider bore size? Currently I'm running a 69 Vette Dual Disc Master Cylinder with an 1 1/8" bore. Can't really help you with mufflers much, I am going to buy Magnaflows or Stainless Specialties Turbo's. One last thing, I would run a good anti-roll bar on the back side. I'm not putting down Duece Factory, but I think there bar is to small, at least on my car. I will be upgrading to a bar from Speedway Engineering, Nascar stuff. You can get bars from 1" to over 1 1/2" and not to teribly expensive. The Duece Factory bar is 7/8" diam. Hope this helps. Oh yeah, under the floor for the booster/master cylinder.Last edited by blwn31; 04-08-2005 at 04:14 PM.

Thanks everyone!! Super info! Nothing beats experience. That I don't have when it comes to building a 32. I have been watching Rocknrod's project closely. This car is going to be nice! I am only an hour and a half from McKinney. I hope I can get down there to see this one. I am driving down to the Sachse Rod Shop tomorrow morning to look at their shop. They seem to be great people. I hope they might have a 32 in their shop that I might look at. I will try to attach a few pictures when I get my chassis near completion. I will have to work my way through a 4th back surgery, disc replacement - geez, before I can finish. The forum has helped me keep my mind off this while I am waiting on surgery. Thanks again everyone.

Man I thought I had it bad with a hernitated disc, but 4 of them. For some reason mine repaired itself but I can't bend over like I use to especially with alot of weight, because my back will let me know its about to go out again. Good luck on your operation.Keep smiling, it only hurts when you think it does!

Sachse is a fine shop too. You can also speak to a local there in Wiley named Craig Hull at (972)429-9340 when you pass through and ask him about me. When I return you can drop by ANYTIME. Thanks

Mufflers - Rockn Rods
Thanks for the invitation Rockn Rods! I didn't get your message before I left, so didn't stop in Wylie. Will do so next trip. I did look at a stretched 32 chassis from Pete & Jakes at the Sache Rod Shop. It had been stretched 5" for a sbc blower motor. Nice work. The rear end c-notch was the normal radius at the front, then tapered back at an angle for about 6". I have never seen this before. If anyone is in the Sachse area, they should stop by and look at the 32 extended cab pickup with the dual wheel rear end setup that is in the shop now. The cab bodywork is immaculate, as is the rest!
I am going to look at the Speedway Motors sway bar setup. This sounds more like what I had in mind. I am still not sure what to run for a brake setup. The standard non power pedal looks more original. The power brake pedal is so short, it looks too close to the floor. I am going to fabricate my own pedal pivot bracket, and am looking for location dimensons. If anyone can help out with this, I would appreciate hearing from them. Thanks

Mufflers
Deuce;
Hello, Not sure if youv'e bought your mufflers yet, I used Stainless Specialties , http://www.stainless-specialties.com/2 1/2" dia. Pipes and 4'' Mufflers their 24" Long, they look like the old Glass Packs, but are Baffled, they also have Straight thru, but with Ceramic Insulation,( Louder than the Baffled ones) both Life time Guarantee. For the Pipes I used Stainless Works in Ohio, http://www.stainlessworks.net/cart/index.php
I purchased their " Street Rod Builders Kit " it has 4 - 4 Foot Lengths of Pipe, 4 - 90 Deg, 4 - 45's and 4 - 180 Deg . nice kit, Summit and Jegs both sell it and shipping is free, they charge you and extra $5.00 for the large Box. You can have the ends swedged for an extra $35 and then the pipes will slip together.
I TIG Welded mine and snaked it in-between the 1 1/2 " tube Crossmembers and it really came out nice, and incidently if you move the mufflers forward the sound gets louder , farther back= Quieter, Hope this helps. TimLast edited by Tim Guzowski; 08-05-2005 at 01:18 AM.
