    Door hinge pin replacement

Hello everyone. I need to replace the door hinge pins on my 5 window. Does this require heating the hinge to remove the pin and do the hinges have to be reamed and bushings installed? Thanks in advance

No heat nor bushings required. The pins may be a pig to remove (you may have to fabricate a "pin press" like the one shown (it won't screw up your paint). The pins are available "oversize" from any good antique auto-parts supplier to accomodate wear in the actual hinge body itself. The hinges can not be reamed without removing them from the door jambs, and this can cause re-alignment nightmares if they are removed.

Take this link for a look at the hing pin press; http://store.bobdrake.com/harsprinsali.html

If the hinge holes are worn oversize, you can jig them up in a drill press and drill both sides at once.

I knocked mine out to 5/16" with a good sharp 5% Cobalt drill.

Made new pins from a 5/16" stainless bolt with long un-threaded portion.
I turned a simple design in the bolt head, left the hex as was - thinner though - and used a thin stainless nylock nut for retainment.
They work well and no rattles.

A touch of theft proofing with the doors bolted on fwiw.

I've also made replacement pins from 5/16" stainless bolts by getting them long enough that the non-threaded portion serves as the hinge, rounding the hex off, thinning the newly rounded head and doing a touch of knurling so that the hinge pin is an interference fit.
As above, the hinge will have to be drilled oversize.

In thirteen years, no one at rod runs, car shows or just onlookers have commented on my using bolts for hinge pins.

The fit of the driver side door is so bad on my 5 window that I am going to have to remove the slop in the hinges before I can make any adjustment. I have already tried a punch without any luck. Man those pins are in there! I was waiting for a few replies before I tried again. Didn't want to screw up the hinges unnecessarily. I will order one of the removal tools from Bob Drake along with pins. Thanks for the replies.
