Similar thing happened to me about a year ago... It was last summer and I took the day off of work to take care of a few chores around the house... Me and my 8 year old boy decided to go have some breakfast and took the roadster on a short trip into town to hit one of the local breakfast spots. When we pulled up one of the cooks came out with a camera and took a photo of us standing beside the roadster... Next time we visited that joint the lady at the front asked if we wanted to sit at "OUR" booth... I had no idea what she was talking about, but just said "sure"... She sat us down at a booth in the back that had a large framed photo from the time we were there before mounted on the wall! My boy loves to go there now and sit in that booth, he thinks we are famous because several of his school friends have said that they have sat in "HIS" booth!!!

One day I went to lunch at a Denny's restaurant, and while I am eating I picked up one of the "Southwest Florida Entertainment Guides" to read. On the cover were a few old cars at a cruise, and I realized the picture was taken through the windshield of my roadster. You could see my dash, carbs, etc. I felt like I had just had my rod featured in Rod and Custom.

I picked up about 20 copies and still have them safely stored away.

That's a cool story - we deuce owners are soooo spoiled! On occasion I will see a girl at a show or cruise night. usually they drive larger cars, such as late 50's or muscle cars. They do not get 20% of the attention the roadster and I (and especially the aviator cap and goggles) get.

Friday I pulled into Ricky and Ronnie's cruise night and you should have seen everyone's faces! PLus I had rallied a "possie" - 4 other cool old cars and their guy owners who followed me in a convoy there. I am steering things a bit, encouraging my new friends to get their cars out and drive further than their local area. The result was a 3 hour cruise down Sepulveda BLvd and about 1.5 hour coming back at night. we had a blast - see photos:

here the boys meet me in the parking lot at my work

here we cruise down Sepulveda in the midst of rush hour traffic - as you can see it is bumper to bumper!

here we arrived at R&R and lined our butts up

here it is almost time to leave

Well, I hope you enjoyed the photos and can't wait to do it again SOON!

Keep on cruising and enjoying it. being you live in Callifornia, I'd suspect you could cruise year round. I'm going to go to Hot August Nights in August. I may drive my '51 Chevy the cross country trip if I'm confident enough the 55 year old 235 will be up to it, ither that or I'll pull it on a trailer and tow it. I'm going to see about getting the car in the show, but if I can't, it will be in the parking lot. seniors in my class are taking a trip in May to the California coast, but I can't justify spending 1k on a 4 day trip to long beach, under supervision as to where I could and couldn't go. They do take a trip on the Pacific Coast Highway, but I think, if I'm within driving distance with my '51, I'll just cruise down it with that.

hey Brian, nice truck! Tell me about your headers, can I see a close up shot?

Matt, Hot August nights takes place in Reno NV no? Or is it San Francisco? I was in the midst of shopping for a car when it happened. I remember hearing about it... But would like to hear more details... I take it it must be pretty darn cool for someone to want to drive from NY to CA to attend!! That's a long drive!

I'll see if i can give you a perpective from Europe.
If people give me the thumbs up, they are really saying 'nice car', that always deserves a response from me usually in a wave. But some people seem to think that if they see you driving a modified car and they are also driving a modified car (usually a 4x4 Bigfoot off roader ), then they think we all have something in common and share the same thoughts and ideas over what is and what isn't......cool! Do you guys have this happening to you?

Something i had never experianced before was on a trip to the French Street Rod Nats in the Auvernge area of France(yes they have hot rods in France) Whole families would stop and wave, even the very young without any form of encouragement from their elders. I though that was very nice, even folks applauding as you drove past. It's not the sort of thing that happens in England. A rude gesture would not be that unusual! I heard of one guy who had an apple core thrown at him when driving his porsche speedster.

In the USA people know what a Hot Rod is, but France??? i suppose they just recognised a funny old car, which is now quite a rarity over there!

But without a doubt..the best thumbs up i received was from a UK traffic cop as i went passed him with no fenders(highly illegal)

Mais oui monsieur, nous avons des hotrods en France aussi!

Wouldn't you know it? I happen to speak fluent French. Not cause I am very smart, but simply because I was born there My mom just sent me a newspaper from Nice (my home town) and it covered their last classic car expo, people are VERY fond of old cars there... She has been showing all her friends my photos and everyone loves the roadster - so I'm told -Although honestly I don't know what the scene is like - since I have not been back there in 20 years.

    Mel,
I know petrol is outrageously priced, but where are all the cars that I keep hearing about - I have probably spent 8 to 10 months of my life in the UK or Rep. of Ireland and have yet to see a street/hot rod. I think the oldest car that I've seen are those odd ball three wheelers or a 50s - 60s Morris Minor or Thames.

Would you believe that after spending 4 weeks and driving 3000 miles in the southwest of USA, other than going to specific Hotrod Gatherings and events i could have said the same about America (apart from LA). There are plenty of real nice HotRods in England/France/Germany etc, but you have to search them out. I've never been to Ireland so i cannot comment. I live in the South west and never ever see anything interesting until i get within yards of the entrance to a show. We have around 10 nice cars in our local club. Did you get to Billing this year or the Supernationals? If you did you would have stunned by the quality of the cars, and i know that there were real nice cars that didn't attend. For the size of our country we have a very healthy scene. It's getting bigger every year.
Your right about petrol though, i've put 15000 miles on the roadster in 2 years. It costs a small fortune (can't think of a better way to spend my money), but we dont cover anywhere near the distances you guys do in a year.

I grew up in Pennsylvania, and all my life dreamed of moving to California where all the hot rods were. Finally, in the late '70's I took a transfer there and lived in southern Cal for a year. I was surprised to see very few hot rods actually out driving around. I thought it would be like American Graffiti every day, but I seldom saw any custom cars.

One weekend I went to a car show/cruise, and there was every hot rod I had grown up seeing in magazines over the years. I was in heaven. In fact, we took a hot rod magazine with us for the kids to read in the car, and the cover car "Turkey T" was driving beside us as we approached the show. Really cool.

But it seems the hot rods got reserved for special outings, and maybe that has changed somewhat since then. (I hope)

I do cross path with other hotrods while driving the roadster, but it is very rare. In 3 months of driving it about 3 or 4 times a week, I have only crossed path with maybe 5 other cars. Of course that is excluding shows and car cruises gatherings. however, when i cruise down neighborhoods, especially Simy valley and my own area, I can see a LARGE amount of hotrods and classic cars parked in driveways and - GARAGES... Anytime a garage door is open I'll peek to see and surely enough BAM here is a hotrod!

the question remains: WHY ARE ALL THESE CARS SITTING?

I saw a sticker on a hotrod the other day that made me smile (sounded so much like me) it read:

CRUISE TILL THE WHEELS FALL OFF

    now that's more like it!
