Updates and hood problem (need help)

Hi Kids !

Some quick updates to let you know what I have been up to, repair wise and hiboy adventures wise. I'll make it short cause I am SUPER budy right now.

1- Did successfully remove my rear light lenses and replaced bulbs, while at it I painted the inside gloss white (thanks for the tip). I also replaced the rubber mounts. I no longer have devil faces in my rear end, just nice old fashioned glass lenses...

Here you can see the rear lights being worked on, rubber seal fell apart when I removed them (haha!):

2- I also finally got around to pull out my original hood side panels from the box and to mount them on my hood to see if they fit. I was happy to see the hinges matched my hood top hinges, no problem there. however I then realized that a)- the latches locations do not match (see pic 1) AND the side panel is a hair longer than my hood top (see pic 2). I believe my hood top is an older 70's roetlib repro... Can anyone measure their original 32 side panel and send me the exact measurements so i can compare with mine. Do i NOT have a 1932 side panel? Could it be another year?? Could it be a 32 panel from something else than a roadster and if so would it matter - as is are there any difference? I was under the impression all the hoods on 32s are interchangeable... ADVICE NEEDED AND MUCH APPRECIATED.

They had all you can drink champagne, lobster and caviar, and more models and plastic people there I cared to look at... I can't remember when was the last time I went to something that fancy... I usually prefer the company of my Australian Cattle dog... but it was fun... for about 30 min, after which I started missing Hiboy and the throaty sound of his new 12 inch glass packs.. So I wanted to take off and leave the party so I could DRIVE HIM SOME MORE.... And so I did.... I must be weird...

Oh and then there was the street inauguration at George Barris last Friday. Bo Dereck was there... I filmed a bit... Maybe if I have any free time I'll have to finally post some video clips... yeah, like that is ever going to happen!!

Alright, gotta run I have some work to do (gotta pay those hotrod bills)...

Faith, that is a 32 hood side panel.
32's measure 32" along the center of the hood top.
30-31 Model A hoods measure 31 5/8"
28-29 Model A hoods measure 27 3/4"

Model A hood sides are straight on the bottom edge, 32's turn down a bit at the rear so as to pick up the swoopy frame lines and flow into the swoopy body lines.



The hood side may pull down to match the lower beltline when there's some tension on it from the hood latches.
I note that the upper hood/body beltline is mis-aligned about the same amount.

As far as the overly long at the back bit goes, there may or may not be an overlap - or double layer of steel - running vertically at the back.

If your hood side panels are not doubled you could have your body guy shorten them by grinding off part of the hood's rear vertical run - or do it yourself, it's not difficult.

A good trick to do this is to clamp a piece of 1 1/2" x 1 1 2" x 1/8" angle steel to it.
Make sure the angle steel is straight.
Clamp it top and bottom so the edge of the angle is where you want to make the cut.
Then use a 4" grinder with Pearl wheel (some call em flap wheels) to grind the excess hood material away.
Grind down to the angle which is now your guide.
Makes for a nice straight edge.
Be sure and deburr.
Use a file here.

You don't want to make the cut with tin snips or you'll bend the hood edge and/or put some waves in it.

I did angle steel/grinding trick with the home-made hood side panels on my 31 on 32 rails roadster and it worked great.

About your tailights . . . is the bulb just lying there in the bottom of the bucket?
Or is the bulb socket that low?

Both sets of my 39 taillights have the socket and bulb centered so the light hits the lense like it's supposed to.

You may want to add the rubber gasket between body and taillight housing.
That'll keep the water out of the body/taillight juncture.

You especially want to run the narrow cork gasket between lense and taillight housing.
Water in there will create electrical/lighting problems.

The body/housing gasket is available at Bob Drake reproductions.
A very good piece fwiw.
They should carry the cork gasket as well.

I think the hood latches look correct and your previous hood had them in the wrong place.

You could always step up and buy a set of these 1932 Ford 25 vent hood sides ... :D
They just sold for $3.582.32 on eBay

All 1932 Ford passenger car hood sides from Ford ... basically interchange ... roadsters, coupes, sedans ... ect. BUT ... There are some minor differences ... because of early production , late production and a few different suppliers ...

Ford had 32 different locations of plants building cars in the USA in 1932.

The old location for the latches was incorrect. Repro hood ... repro latches ... just move the latches to work with the original hood sides ...

Glad ya had that MoPar along to prop on, as i expect those others would not have been sturdy enough.:LOL:

Early Fords did not have what we would consider an acceptable fit in many cases. Hoods have to be fitted and tweeked to make them fit right. '32's are better than Model A's, fortunately. I would agree with C9x that you should have a talk with you body man. Hoods are the trickiest part of these cars, and if you feel uncomfortable doing the work yourself, you might defer to a professional.

As far as your hood goes, why not leave off the hood and put a 572 BBC in there?

If it was mine I think I would either live with some mismatch or take it to somebody who knows what they are doing; $. Of course it's a 32, so is it supposed to be perfect? I certainly have some imperfections in mine and; 'if you don't like 'em then you can ................ '

Hey Kitz, why would Faith skimp with a little 572 BBC because with her "deep pockets" and hot looks she should at the very least be running a 632 BBC with a 871 BDS blower on top for her cruises!

Deep pockets he? Last I checked the depth of my pockets was filled with AIR

I work two jobs so i can be left with a couple dollars at the end of the months which are instantly spent on my hotrod....

When I change my engine it will be for a flathead... And that's not about ot happen anytime soon :)... Cause of the AIR in my DEEP POCKETS.... :rolleyes:

OK here are the answers:

1- 32 inches for a 32 hood? how appropriate :LOL: !
2- side panel has double layer at both ends
3- bulb is securely screwed in but located towards bottom of housing but I had to unscrew EVERYTHING in order to get the housing off to paint it.
4- Of course I put both rubber gaskets in - I am not THAT clueless :LOL: (just a little clueless, that's all)

I am going to try to find an original hood top next. they come up on and off on ebay. This way I will have an original hood top to bottom and hopefully the length will match this time :LOL:

How the *&"?? do you get the lense off the 39 tailights. We have a set to go on the coupe. I was going to test them on a battery but they would not burn. I proceeded to try and check the bulb but could not get the lense off. I took the screw out but the trim ring is crimped around the light???????????

yeah Danny, I had the same problem, that's because there is a tab at the top that makes it hard to pull out the lense chrome ring... You have to pull out at the bottom (where the screw is) a bit and then pull UP so the tab disengages and THEN the lense will come off...

Fun stuff :).

PS: careful to not let the lense drop, it will break.

I thought so as well.

It's kinda funny when you start measuring on a Deuce, lots of things are 32".


A little off the subject, but my 31 on 32 rails roadster project has a hood length of 32 5/8" and the wheelbase is 105" which falls in between the Deuce and Model A wheelbases of 106" and 140".

It may be interesting for you to measure the top longitudinal length of the hood side panel and compare it to a gennie 32 hood side panel.

Measuring your hood top at the outer bottom edges would be a good idea.

Before I'd spring for a gennie Deuce hood side I'd think about doing one of two things.
Lengthen the hood top or shorten the hood sides.

A job easily done by a skilled body man.

I have a friend in Ventura who can do it.

He chopped the top on this Henry J drag race car and it came out very nice.
Especially when you consider the gloss black paint.
Chopping tops on rounded top cars ain't easy....:)
