    9" Ford center sections

Is Detroit Trutrac the best for street and occasional drag use? I have a LSX 454 with an auto. I have been leaning towards a nodualar case with 3:50 gears. Oh it's a 3 window. Am I going in the right direction? Edd

There are varying degrees of " BEST "

I am of the opinion that if you have fenders ... and the car is not Pro-Street ... you cannot put enough tire on a 32 Ford ... to hurt a good 9 inch Ford. I have the Strange aluminum center section and Daytona pinion support under both my 32 roadster and 32 3W. 31 spline axles are under both ... with a Detroit " locker " under the 3W. I have just a regular Ford " limited slip " under the roadster.

The 454 in your coupe will make the coupe even more nose heavy and harder to HOOK up. The 454 will also have more torque to help fry the tires. ( side note, the roadster had a aluminum headed 427 open chambered engine years ago ).

i have had one detroit locker i had it for 4 years and do not care for it much but that was the only thing i could get with 35 spline axles move up to that when i put the 632 donovan in the gto be for i had a 4 spider ford clutch 31 units i had them working with all stock parts but no crush sleeve and used one in both cars . they work good never played with them from a 468 to a 548 cid 14.8 roller engine with a stock case i had the same one in for over 25 years .had one in my tube out 66 gto came out when i move up to a 573 used 40 spline and spool and a HRW iron case and a big pin nickle gear so that went in to my 50 chevy with many bbc engine from 548 blown down to 468 i had a stock center and pin supports i went to a HRW case in both cars was well as daytona pin supports and mosher alxes . you want to keep away from the 4 hole or window track unit they have the holes or windows on the clutch side and crack but they were made like this early on and ford stop making them like that for over 30 years if setup right i would take one over a locker any day but that maybe just me

The 454 is not a big block it is a LSx block that Chevrolet sells. I have hopes of putting slicks on it every now and then, that is why I have a concern for the strength of the Center. Thanks for the replys so far. Edd

My Detroit " locker " is noisy ...

It makes clicks and clacks ... when turning. It originally came out of a 1969 Boss 302 Mustang. It is very low miles and never rebuilt. I used it because I had it.

Both the 32 Roadster and the 32 3W have 430 HP SBC ...

    The 32 3W ( above )

    The 32 roadster ( above )

Both of mine are all Henry steel metal have fenders ...

Have had slicks on the roadster and a 175 shot of NOS
Never hurt anything but your results
    May vary ...

Hey Mr Duece, the noise is the main reason I do not want a locker. I have been a rodder all my life and it seems the little lady is getting a tad bit nervous as she ages gracefully, so comfort for her and all out HP for me is the theme for the car. I have seen your pictures here on Club Hotrod several times before, those are nice cars, and they must love you at the Chevrolet dealers, buying 2 430's. I think Monday I will send off to Summit and order the Trutrac. I appreciate what ya'll have had to say.

I have a 3.89:1 Detroit True-Trac is my 3W and I think it is a great combination with my 700R4 and 30 inch rear tires. The True-Trac is like driving with an open rear end, but when it senses spin, the worm gears engage and give you bite with both rear tires. No noise, and no issues that I have noticed. If you are going to use sticky tires and go to the drag strip a lot, a locker would be a better choice. But if you are driving primarily on the street using street tires with just an occasional trip to the strip, a True-Trac would be a good choice.

With a 3:89 does it feel like it is spinning a lot of rpms at highway speeds, I was thinkin something like a 3:50. I looked at your pics you have linked, very nice car. Edd

I turn 2200 rpm at 70 mph thanks to the overdrive.
