Winters quick change rear end
I am planning to build a 32 3w coupe "old School". I like the looks of the Winters quick change rear end. This will be a daily driver. What are the pros and cons of a Winters quick change rear end?

Noisy and expensive....Tend to break the housing with a good hook..... IMO, not daily driver material.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

I hope Bill (Gastrick) sees this thread. He is running some quickchange in his Deuce and loves it. I'll PM him and get his attention so he can offer you his input.

I sent Bill a PM. Until he sees it, here is a little picture of his QC. I forget what one it is though.(BTW, that isn't grease poring out of his QC, that is a rain puddle )

Thanks for the heads up Don.
Florida, I run the the Winters "V-8" model rear in my 32. They are supposed to be good for 600 or more horsepower but I have no proof of that. Winters also has the Champ model that's stronger, but larger. Dave was correct in saying that the rear is LOUD, but I like it.....crazy I know. You can get helical gears that are quiet but they are not as strong. I have not used those but I'm told they offer a substantial noise reduction. I don't drive my car daily but I do drive it, sometimes for hundreds of miles. No complaints from me but I will say that I don't think a quick change is for everybody. My car is kind of rowdy to begin with.I may not be good but I sure am slow

Aren't hot rods supposed to be rowdy???? I just noticed. I'm on the verge of hitting 9,000 posts. And I've only been a member 2 weeks!

I have a winters under my 32. I drove it with no interior about 100 miles, That sucker was unbelievable noisy. I put dynamat throughout the car and then the interior. Now its not bad at all if you keep the rear window rolled up. I am still running straight cut gears too. Pete & Jake had a new design winters QC at the nats in louisville it really looked good. It had the old style axle tubes with the unpolished center or with polished center. Just drive fast the noise is all behind you. Hotrods are supposed to be loud.

I'd like to see that new P&J quickie. That sounds like something that would work well with a project I'm about to start. I don't see anything about it anywhere though, dangit.I may not be good but I sure am slow

Jason at P&J told me that winters had just started making the new design QC. I did see one at the Honest Charlie booth. It has the large tapered axle tubes, looked real nice.

I have 2 champ style QC. One is a Hildebrand, in my truck and a winters in my roadster. I put the helix's cut gears in the winters and is very quiet. The truck was really noise with straight cut gears so I started asking around to my friends that have them. What they told me was you can make a set of straight cuts as quiet as you like.operantly it is all to do with the centerline of the pinion and the main shaft. They are not all the same. It only take s a few thousands to make a huge difference on noise from the spur gears. I bought 3 sets of gears from Winters all the same gear ratio. They all sounded different when installed. One set was perfect for the noise I wanted. You can have a quiet Quick Change.

a problem with the helix cut gears is that the housings are not set up to deal with the thrust loading of the angle cut gears
on the straight cuty gears---there are different combos that will be quieter than others as the backlash clearance is different between various ratios------they use a certain tooth shape/size, and so many teeth will define a certain diameter gear--without being able to change the shaft centerline, you get noise on all except the perfect combo---whatever that is.

Spadaro has his quickie assemblies made by Winters http://www.dickspadaro.com/quickchange.html, wonder if P&Js is a rebrand of the same setup?Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon

Ya know ....... I contemplated a QC in/for my ratty 46 build ...... just didn't see one local 4 sale at a reasonable price. I ended up with a ho-hum FAB9 from Chassis Works. Oh well. No one is getting under the car anyway - it set up to sit 4-5 inches off the ground. Noise ........ My exhaust is exiting out the lower portion of the rear of the front fender.

Thanks for the input. I guess I will use a Ford 9" instead. I want to use the car as a DD and don't want alot of noise in my ride.
