I gotta go with Tech on this one, if you spend the money on the right driveline and suspension peices the car will work better with less horsepower simply because it can hook up and not gernade the drive train. If you want to just do smokey burnouts, stay with the narrow tire, or get a wider tire that is a real hard compound. If you are going to double your horsepower output from stock, you have to have a drivetrain and suspension to make it work or you just blew a bunch of money on horsepower that you can't use.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Denny on here told me when building my car that I should start from the engine and work my way back. Are you guy's saying I should do the opposite? He said get my motor, build it and then get a good tranny to match the HP of the motor, then the driveline and rear end to match that. What are your guys' oppinion on this? I am not going against what Denny is saying at all either because he is one smart guy and has helped me tons but I just wan't more oppinions on this. Sorry to add another question in here though but I was following it because I thought it was interesting and you guy's brought up some points...

I think the point is a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. If your adding extra power everything else has to be beefed up accordingly or it won't hold together.
If your going to build one thing at a time, and drive it between upgrades, start with the back end and work forward. When I was a kid I DIDN'T do it that way however. If you don't plan to drive it until it's done ...... it doesn't make any difference what end you start on, as long as ALL the parts are up to the task of transferring the power from the engine to the rear tires.

I did the same thing your Son's buddies wanted to do when I was in H.S. - I did put a set of 4:10 gears in the 12 bolt .......................but then broke the spider gears"PLAN" your life like you will live to 120.

Thnx for all the replys.I have been out of town working. This is a inherited project that came as is and I want to put all 5,000 pieces back into a single unit ,because of room and money. Also the dmv will not register pieces so I can get a title. With all the vehichle laws changing...... and being in C.A. its pretty tuff anyway.MY plan is to assemle it and get a title and be able to drive it also.I thought to accomplish this I would leave the factory size tires for now as a way to minimize shock and breakage to the drive train. With the car in 1 piece and mobil, upgrading the drive train as money allows and then putting the power to the ground ,no racing, just a little fun ,not monster meats. My logic was a small tire only produces so much friction so as long as I dont hook up the drivetrain I will not see any different strain? Provided I do not act foolish untill I upgrade the driveline and then start to work on using tire size to hook up.Last edited by shawnlee28; 02-12-2005 at 09:48 PM.

I'd suggest you use a mild engine to get the car straightened out. You can get yourself in big trouble and I don't mean with the local authorities. You might find yourself in the weeds with an engine that the car can't handle.
500, even 450 horsepower is capable of making things happen in a big hurry and with skinny tires you may not be able to control any of it.
The skinny tires will get no traction and you'll tire of that very quickly especially when someone with much less engine blows you away because they can get it all to the ground. Wouldn't that be embarrassing?

what i'm doing w/ my car is building the engine and keeping the drivetrain stock cept for a manual valve housing and when something breaks cause of 2much hp replace it with the best part available at the time that way you don't have to spend all of your money at once and replace parts that will handle the stress for another year when you don't need to as for me i've got 2 sets of tires one 7inch wide and one 4.5inches wide the 7 inchers are for when i go to shows and race the 4.5 are for driving on the street~:low budget baby:~
