If You build a comporable 396 --427--454 using the same parts in each one you will see there is just about 25 hp to be gained on each step up. Not that I would have known this ,but I recently ask a friend that builds big block race engines for a living. He has built more than 200 and won in boats and cars as well. Anyone that has been a national record holder in both I have to respect their opinion.

The other advantage of the 427 is internal balance. No worries about the flywheel and dampner. I like 'em. I just like cubic inches more .

Somehow 427 has that nostalgic ring to it . I have a 396 block already bored 060, plate honed with new cam bearings in it .Im sure it would make a very good motor but, 408 doesnt sound anywhere near as good as 427. I am considering having it sonic tested to see if it can stand being bored to a 427. Whenever it needed to be rebuilt I could trash the block

    Bore a 396 block to 4.250" ?
Take your wife to dinner with the money you'd spend on the sonic check.

Tech, I dont have a wife, I've already had my quota. My girlfriend of 11 years is here now,but she can only stand me 4 nights a week.

I have been tempted to do that ,but I know of 2 here that had major heating problems.I would not try to bore a 402 to 427. those blocks were thinner and lighter than the 396.

How about if I pay for the sonic test and let her pay for dinner?

Actually, we just got in from a nice Italian restraunt, and I paid,

RATS! May not have enough left for sonic testing.
