Rear suspension mods
Old technology guy needs help. Have a 68 Chevelle with a 540 Merlin, having trouble hooking up. Need on hand advice as to how to proceed. Have air bags, lift bars and 10.5 MT's. Best 60' is 1.55. I read about these people running 9-10.5 tires and hooking up with 1.2-1.4 60' times, how do they do it? You see pics of them standing the car on the back bumper, now thats hooking a car up! Need help guys, please, thanks

Dude,
Most of those guys probably have 4-link suspensions - not modified GM stock. You can go that route, which involves a lot of work, or see about a Hotchkis Performace adjustable rear suspension package (Part # 1803 A).

Have you wieghed your car? a good front to rear ratio helps a ton? A fourlink with a diagnal link or a wishbone and some coilovers would go a long way in hooking that car! It takes a lot of time to setup a car that runs hard on a small tire! I'm assuming it is caged how many points? What kind of times are you running?
what do you launch the car at? do you have a trans brake? How big is the converter?

I would agree with Henry and Travis. If you dip into the 9's you'll only make that one pass. Track officials will send you home until you have a certifiied cage or you slow the car down. How much power is the 540 makin'? If you want to see a four link set up, click on the camera by my name, or check out Blown Goats gallery, Vara4 is working on one, Pro60chevy is building a go fast chassis. I'm sure there are more.
Here is a thread that might help.

BTW: Vagas I think I posted chassis tubing size and thickness someplace. If you still need it let me know."PLAN" your life like you will live to 120.

GUYS, The fast guys I'm talking about are running stock location suspension with aftermarket componts. Its either IHRA or AHRA 10.5 class. They are running in the 7's to 9's (1/4 mile) They are using juice but the cars must be unaltered in body and chassis except for aftermarket upgrades. NOS is not used on launch I'm guessing. My car weighs 3000 lbs, motor makes 717hp at 5800, 688lbs torque at 4800 and has 600 lb+ torque from 2400 rpm on up. Converter is a 9" hughes 3200 that flashes to 4000. Gears are 4.10 spooled. Car went a 6.89/102 (1/8) off the trailer last Sunday but spun way into 2nd gear. Car should run 6.15 if I can get it to hook. I didn't want to cut it up with tubs and 4-link, its to nice a car for that. 10 point cage, foot braking, on the converter to 2000. best run leaving at idle. (1400)
